Novation Remote SL + iPad - Good Combo?

Thinking about picking up a midi controller for my iPad, good choice?

Comments

  • Not sure about its usb class compliance for midi so you will need an usb midi adaptor.
It's better choice LaunchControl XL + Launchpad (pro version if you need velocity pads like Remote SL).

What use are you wondering for it?

  • Gadget and synths

    Gadget and synths

I use a remote 25 with Gadget and it works quite nicely now that i have programmed setups for each Gadget....
As Gadget does not support MIDI control of the mixer or transport you cannot use any of the transport controls on the Novation
The SL should be even better as it has the control label displays that the Remote 25 doesn't.

I connect my remote 25 via a USB to MIDI cable connected to a powered hub.

  • Keep in mind you either need a power adapter or the new cck3+ lightening adapter. The remote series will not run off the iPads bus power.

Yes....this is also true.....but you need to do this anyway if using the MIDI ports and not the usb........I am using rechargeable batteries in my Remote 25

  • SL series ARE Usb midi compliant , showing 3 Usb Midi ports , the 3rd for Automap I think.
I would recommend for the Midi PickUp function built into the firmware , which along with the LCD Scribble Strips , really makes programming & performance easier.

They also offer some Mackie MCU / HUI support ( basd on specific DAWS) , so some basic functions work with MCU/HUI implemented apps such as Auria Pro , such as Scribble Strip feedback , faders , etc , but I've yet to get deeper stuff ( plugin control) to work )

It makes a good choice then. I was affraid about required drivers since it has automap madness.
Thanks for pointing it @Wally !

Edit. i should also mention they also support NRPN, RPN & Sysex messages .
There are also sustain & expression pedal inputs which can be remapped to any CC
($100 in specialist pedals right there for free ) ,
& the flexible programmable midi patchbay 2 din midi x 3 usb midi ports has solved some tricky midi wiring scenarios for me .
All in all I think it's the best controller on the market

The remote 25 has most of these features as well and has proved its worth time and time again over the years......I may have to look at the SL if it is compliant....and those scribble strips are what the Remote 25 is really missing. the cardboard overlays are just too fiddly.
Does the SL also have aftertouch...the Remote 25 keybed has a pretty nice feel and has aftertouch.

  • I own a remote zero SL MK1. Yes. It's is USB bus complaint. And with a Pc/Mac it works via bus power. That sadly doesn't extend to IOS devices regardless of which Cck you use. Cck1 you need either a power adapter or a powered hub. (It also supports D Cell batteries). Cck3 it works fine as long as the cck has a power supply via lightening cable. A 2.1A battery bank works wonders if you want your setup to work say in the middle of a beach.

Which template do you use with Auria ? I'm genuinely curious.

well , it was initial testing TBH , as I'm not using Auria Pro in anger .
but just checked again , the straight Mackie HUI setting In Auria + Logic Template in SL gets Scribble Strip showing names . Dont forget to turn HUI on in Global settings , set ID port & match that port as Send/receive Remote in Auria Settings .

Awesome. Thanks. Been breaking my head to get the launchcontrol XL to work with Auria completely forgetting that the remote zero had hui support. :)

If you're on the latest firmware Launchcontrol XL now has HUI support so should work in Auria no problem.

Cck3 only powers the ipad, not stuff you hook into it. So if the usb device requires more power than ipad can give out, you need powered usb hub as well

actually that's not true. the cck3 can power the novation audiohub.(sound only) it can even power multiple usb devices like the launchpad pro and multiple midi controllers. waaaay beyond what the ipad is capable of by itself.
it might not power as many devices as when you attach a powered usb hub but it can definitely handle a few that would normally need a powered hub. i use it every day so i know this is true.

  • Here's a launchpad pro and 2 keith mcmillan k-boards being powered with an unpowered usb hub with the cck3 connected to a 2.1A usb power bank. the launchpad pro will not work at all without something connected to the lightening port on the cck3.

Either you have very tiny equipment or that is a very large uncooked sausage !!

Thats weird because i have seen people test it and it gave no power to anything but the ipad. Maybe this new mystery update to it made this better?
