Focusrite Scarlett 2i4
Hi,
I've been trying to use my Focusrite Scarlet 2i4 (1st gen) with my Ipad Mini 2 (Ios 10.3.1) today. The idea was to use it as a midi device to interface the Ipad with my Monomachine and MPC 1000. However, it did not work.
Let me explain what I did.
- Use the CCK-USB3-Interface with the Ipad. It's plugged into the IPad PSU and it's charging the Ipad.
- Then I hooked up the Scarlett:
a) directly via the CCK
b) via a powered USB-hub
The result was that the "Pad" or "Phantom Power" buttons on the Scarlett were blinking, but the USB-LED never lit up. So now I'm wondering what I did wrong. Do I need another powered USB-Hub or am I better off buying (another) Midi-Interface. If so, which one is reasonably priced and reliable?
Many thanks!

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like your Scarlett isn't getting enough juice. FWIW, the 2nd gen Scarletts have a low power mode. I would try another hub before buying another interface. The link below has some suggestions.

Also, I've had good luck with MIDI over wi-fi, using my computer as a hub for routing MIDI I/O. If you're on a PC, you'll need a virtual MIDI driver like...

Good luck!
If you did want to go with another interface I just picked up a Behringer UMC204HD. It runs off the CCK3 just fine, has MIDI, and the price can't be beat.
Many thanks. I've used my Mac before for syncing the iPad with my other gear and that worked fine when I used Ableton Link or Midimux. I was thinking of a live situation where I wouldn't use a PC.
It might be a good idea to buy get another hub. Most powered hubs run pretty close to what an iConnect Mio1 Midi Interface would cost, so I'm thinking that I should simply buy that and be done.
Anyhow. Thanks for your help. )
Sometimes things are more banal than you think. Turns out my hub's PSU was broken. It works fine with the replacement.
I purchased the zoom u-22 and it works directly with the cck (old and new one) without extra power. If you need some more power you can use the new cck (usb3) or place batteries. Very nice portable interface for only 79,- euro including a line-in,mic and guitar input.
Cool. Thanks for your help. It's really the midi stuff that's important to me. But like I said - it works fine now that I've used a new power adapter for my USB hub.
