Trying to recreate this bass sound (Jamiroquai - Vitamin)

Awesome awesome track from their new album:

It might be a simple thing, but I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to fx on the bass. -I play pretty regular with my ~£100 bass guitar.

The effect has a buzzy electric'ness to it at the low low end, but higher notes have much less of the effect.

Can anyone advise particular apps or presets I could use to achieve this sound?
(I have ApeFilter and Filtatron now which I'm going to try later, but I only bought them earlier today and haven't given them a go yet).

But if there's any others like AmpKit or even Amplitube which can pull this off I'd be glad to hear any suggestions.

Thanks for reading guys!
Take care!

  • Link not working bro..

  • I think Saturn's Modern Synth Sand preset would get you close to this, with some tweaking. Worth trying some Volcano presets as well. Listened to the song on Youtube.

@theconnactic thanks for these suggestions. I wasn't sure what those were but they seem to be addon synths for Auria. I'd be willing to give them a go definitely but I'd like to see if i can find a cheaper option first! I'd they were ~£10 I'd more likely to purchase but I'm only really after this 1 effect.

@JangoMango i blame Spotify for that! ( I copied the link directly using it's share URL option). -although i can see now clicking it takes you to a dead place. Spotify!!

    THINGS I'VE TRIED:

    • AMPLITUBE -cant find any free pedals to achieve the effect (closest I've got was Fuzz pedal)
    • AMPKIT+ (same)
    • I have Sugarbytes TURNADO, WOW, EFFECTRIX and APEFILTER available, but I need to learn how to use them properly. I guess the main problem is, i know how to describe that bass sound in human terms but i don't know specifically what is happening to be able to try and simulate that.

To my luddite ear, i would say the low-end is.. 'crushed'? I don't exactly know...

I just tried here, by adding a bass line from one of my songs and then applying the plug-ins: the Saturn presets sounded somewhat too aggressive, but two of the Vocano's presets sounded a lot closer: specifically, "Rawness 3" and "Rawness 4".

That seems to imply you're already on the right track: a filter is what you looking for, preferrably one that can produce distorted sounds. What about Turnado? I don't have it, but everyone say it's very powerful.

  • Thanks again for your advice, and for trying those things out. I will have a try with Turnado later, (until now i totally missed the part of the UI which has about 100 presets). So I'll have a go.
