USB CCK or 5 pin midi?
Which is better? Is one better than the other? I currently use 5 pin midi out of my keyboard into iRig midi 2 into iPad but I also have an Apple cck and USB out on keyboard.

There shouldnt be any real difference afaik. If there is some desktop editor for the keyboard you use, you could hook the usb to computer and midi ports to ipad.
USB can also provide power to a device which 5 PIN cannot.......Although for USB to work your MIDI device HAS to be MIDI Class Compliant (older devices or those requiring lots of power may not be)
Also USB is able to send far more data than standard 5 pin MIDI...
Novation Circuit sends more MIDI information out when connected via USB instead of the 5 PIN connection.....Don't know how many other devices do this though.
A real tech-head could probably count the milliseconds of delay introduced by each path, which would depend on circuitry and cable runs. Shorter cable runs and less intervening circuitry are usually better as a rule of thumb, no?
You can plug a midi 1x1 interface into hub+cck.
You can't plug usb drives into midi... without a usb2midi host adapter.
The first require a cck (the most expensive 45€).
The second usually cost near 100€ (aprox) but you can research into Raspberry Pi as cheapo solution.
I prefer the first and use my time to make more music![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Thanks guys, lots of info here. I use a Roland RD 64, the USB is midi class compliant and works fine with the cck. I use the midi 5 pin midi and iRig midi 2 for live (not sure why I ever picked that over the cck?? just habit i guess...) I was curious if one was known to have better overall performance than the other, it sounds like both work equally well.
Well the irig midi vs original cck has the plus of charge iDevice... but with new cck3 usb you can charge iDevices finally...![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I use 5-pin, into my audio/midi interface, into CCK3.
