How are the Moog Model 15 expansion packs?
How are the Moog Model 15 expansion packs?
Not just the old ones, but the three new ones: Alien Systems, Mercurial Strategies and Sinfonietta Sintesi.
Are they any good?
I'm not real fond of the Model 15 UI, but cannot deny the sounds it can make, so expansion packs might be worth it to me.
Comments
Mercurial Strategies is incredible. Well worth it. 75 patches, nice varied selection, focused heavily on (awesome) drones and pads. Buy this one for sure. It's the best of the 6.
The symphony one is basically Switched on Bach instruments with a few cool modern patches thrown in. Synth orchestral instruments (bassoon, horns, etc) aren't really my bag, but they sound good even if they're dry and boring.
The Alien one is a bit of a mixed bag. It does have a few cool sci-fi ish drones and effects, but it feels padded out with several versions of 'slightly drifting oscillators MiniMoog leads'.
The completist in me says they're all worth it, but the Mercurial Strategies blows the others away, and there's so much in the pack you won't get bored of it soon, especially if you enjoy reverse engineering the patches to figure out what the hell's going on.
All 3 have pretty solid liner notes attached to each patch to let you know what's primarily going on.
@oat_phipps good overview and I agree about Mercurial Strategies. Also works great in AB3.
Any audio samples guys?
Moog has updated their already excellent Model 15 app, and along with substantial updates to the Audiobus capabilities, Midi and the built-in recorder they have included three new collections of presets available as IAPs, including a collection I designed specifically for this app called Mercurial Strategies.
I've created a demo for some of these sounds that can be auditioned here:
These recordings were made by running the M15 played live via an Arturia Launchpad 25 keyboard through Audiobus and directly into Auria on an IPad pro.
No additional EQ, effects or apps were employed during the recording process.
This collection contains 75 presets from my personal library that I've created for this app, which are each carefully crafted to display a number of powerful capabilities and programming strategies that might normally be overlooked by other programmers. This is not a collection with multiple variations of the same basic patch routing (or "strategy"). Most of these presets utilize a unique realization of module arrangement to produce their sound and each is capable of providing many more useful variations of the example presented when a user explores the options represented in that particular "strategy".
These cover a wide range of offerings, from lush pads to cutting leads to surreal soundscapes and effects, and each has documentation embedded in the preset description discussing such things as unusual programming techniques involved, sound concept genesis, advantageous adjustments, and useful playing suggestions to get the most out of each patch.
In them, I explore interesting and unique ways to create velocity sensitivity, stereo manipulation, unusual and dynamic filtering, creative techniques for the built-in digital delay, controllable feedback networks, differential and phase modulation, alternative uses for the Mod Wheel, and many others. A number of these patches specifically utilize the incredible polyphonic capabilities of the app. This makes exploring each preset aurally interesting and gratifying, as well as serving as a handy tutorial for users to incorporate these useful and powerful concepts into their own work.
I'm a 30+ year owner of a Moog System 55 (as well as many other synthesizers by Moog, Sequential, Oberheim and others) and have developed a number of interesting patches for it both on my own, and through interactions over the years with the many fascinating and talented individuals I've had the good fortune of meeting and collaborating with. As you might expect, I've been able to scale and transfer some of these to the Model 15 platform, with what I think are very good results.
I hope that these patches will inspire you to create your own great electronic music!

Cheers!
@Audiohub WOW thanks for posting and so glad I purchased your collection.
SynthAnatomy has a video sound demo of 1 of the sound packs

I'm putting in a real effort to learn the Model 15. I've paid for the Ask.Audio tutorial and went through it. Tackled everything on youtube. I like to think I'm a fast learner...but 20 plus videos later, and I still don't know how to make it work for me. I DO have a better understanding of the synths ins-and-outs (pun intended)--and synths in general. (I am a year into this whole thing). But I wouldn't know where to begin to get a specific sound.
I'm going the reverse engineering patch route at this point! Can't wait to get home tonight and check out these new patches!
One thing is for sure---I have so much respect for those that have mastered anything Moog related. I am tirelessly fascinated with all things Moog. Thanks for all your insight!
And for another too:

Moog Model 15 - Outstanding & Exceptional. Such good sounds ...
There are some immediately likeable patches in every pack, but tweaking reveals immense details and facets in every one of them. The character of that synthesizer is capable of teleporting me in a film noir movie or a dystopic sci-fi environment, or some place inside my memories. Btw. have noticed that you can tap&drag presets into folders, nice ;]
@Audiohub Man, you did an incredible job with these. Mind is blown playing with these and expanded by learning from them. And thanks for including the notes. I finally feel like the full capabilites are shown off after a year of intermediate fiddling.
On @oat_phipps tip off I picked up Strategies yesterday.
Generally meaty sounding and evolving, nice.
Thanks all for the kind words, everyone!!
Those with the app might want to visit the current post on my blog page
Cheers!
I think they are fantastic, especially in the context of a "learning" synth.
Of course, this synth is production ready. Studying other people's patches and fiddling with them helps you learn how to create your own patches.
If you are looking for decent diversity in terms of patches, you will be happy. But you will be even more happy if you are looking to learn.
@Audiohub
Much obliged - your sound design work is amazing and thanks for the bonus (hint hint to those that haven't yet visited the synthguy site...)
would love to be able to use an intelligent randomizer in conjunction with these patch collections
dear Geert..... please make it happen.
@Audiohub just based on your descriptive post i'm getting this
@Audiohub Didn't realise these were yours, they are excellent, recommended for everyone.
I doubt that anyone will be disappointed with the Mercurial Strategies IAP. it really is fantastic.
I still don't have model15 because I'm worried it won't run well on my iPad mini.. but I want it now for these patches
IPad mini that's equivalent to the air

The Staggered Attack and Flutter presets in the bonus pack are awesome. God bless synthguy
Bonus patches sound great, thanks.
@LeonLeroy have a look at syntotial, the first lessons are free. I felt the same as you, i really wanted to recreate sounds rather than stumble upon stuff. I can do both a bit better now.
Model 15 will run on mini2/air but it is the min spec so maybe on its own is best
you can run the model15. but that's pretty much it. wouldn't even try running other synth apps at the same time. still. a portable moog modular is still a fantastic thing
also you can just record the output into blocs/audioshare/cubasis/Auria and then unload the model15 to use those sounds with other apps
FWIW, almost all the preset development for Mercurial Strategies was done on my first-generation iPad Air. I have both power-saving features enabled in the app settings (minimal IOS processing and Eco Mode), and I find that I can use it with Audiobus and several effects apps in the chain with no glitching or problems. I'm still on the last version of IOS 9, because it's working fine for what I do, and nothing is currently forcing me to upgrade. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before that next great "IOS 10 Only" app will appear.
Know however, that working with this on a smaller iPad will almost certainly inspire longing for the iPad Pro, so beware.
This happened to me.
Ditto!

It was an instant buy for me, having this little extra insight is a bonus, thanks @Audiohub
@Audiohub
Class. There is a lot of very usefull material here. Knowing the workflow tweaking the Model 15, there is a lot of hard work behind this great creation. Performed by a truly skilled, clever and cunning professional. Respect, congrats and thank you.
Mercurial strategies is sublime. Definitely a must have. So much gold in there
