Read different opinions of iMaschine for iOS. NI doesn't seem to put everything in this app, because they don't want to canabalize on their hardware version. Anybody more info on this? $4.99 seems a steal but as it could be a crippled piece of software, maybe it's the same as throwing money out of the window.

I've removed for now...hopefully UVI BeatHawk will eventually inspire them to treat iOS producers with respect :)

  • Machine is crippled in the sense that it only allows 4 patterns and 4 tracks. It would be forgivable if it were better suited as a performance app but here as well it is lacking where other apps like patterning or impc are better. However I prefer machine for its ui and the sample content is great sounding. Machine could be improved with more tracks, patterns, midi, and better features in terms of ui usability for performance. Features it excels in are building cool sounding kits and making quick patterns which can be directly exported into apps like Blocs Wave/Launchpad or Cubasis.

Imaschine 2 is good if you can live with its limitations, like 4 tracks only and no midi in. Also the sound packs are pretty good and arent too expensive(i bought it mainly for its sounds that i would use elsewhere). I used it mainly as a drum machine and it does its job with that. But if you want some all in one app that can do loads of stuff, imaschine is not that, beatmaker 3 on the other hand has similar mpc style interface(among other views) and is more daw like, all in one app.

It's a shame. Very enjoyable workflow, and the sound packs are excellent. But I suppose you could use it as a sample player. The ultimate soundpack is only $9.99, and that includes everything ever released as a soundpack, something like 35 of them, which are underpriced at 99¢ each. But I don't' think you can really extract the sounds if you don't want to use iMaschine.

I love iMaschine. It's got really fantastic sounds. I would rarely, if ever, expect to do an entire project in just one app, so I'm not really bothered that it might be less of a complete workspace environment than say Gadget or Beathawk. Yes, there is room for improvement, and it will always be the kid brother of real desktop Maschine. But it's an inspiring instrument that can add special ingredients alongside other instruments in a project. Plus, they are constantly releasing new expansions for it, keeping it current with all the latest trends in electronic music scenes around the world.

And Traktor DJ is really great at what it does. It was actually the first musical app that I discovered on the iPad that made me realize the iPad could be used for serious business.
