Keith McMillan QuNexus

I'm surprised there isn't more discussion around these parts relating to the excellent Qunexus. I just purchased one, and it is an invaluable addition to an iPad-centric studio.

Soon, I am going to complete my mobile rig by purchasing an iConnectMidi2+ - audio pass-through is a killer feature. Does anyone know if I can use the iConnectMIDI in lieu of the KMI MIDI expander, to provide DIN MIDI for the Qunexus without a host? I noticed that it has USB B connectors, which is a bit odd.

  • It is definitely interesting! I planned on buying one until I figured out how to get my battery powered Oxygen 8 to work with my iPad. Once I had that working, I didn't need the QuNexus anymore. I still think it's a great piece of kit though! :-)

I'm interested in your experiences with the iConnectMidi2 as well, and will be interested in the conversation that hopefully ensues. :-)

If that thing could send over wifi (and perhaps even bluetooth) I'd probably jump on it. With a price tag like that I'd rather go with some Korg mini/micro or similar thing, or just use the iPad screen.

  • 2+ doubtful. Its B ports are client ports for the iPad / PC. You need the host A port on the 4+.

Have a QuNexus and a QuNeo. Still ramping up on these complex beasties.

  • If you buy an iConnectMidi 4+ you connect your Qunexus Direct on the back USB hub for use it on all devices connected....
I planned to connect on it my Audio Interface for route 24 bit audio out for all my devices

  • I was kind of worried about the expressiveness of the QuNexus at first. Just feels so different. But after using it for a bit I've realised it's just a matter of technique (and obviously whatever it's triggering). Once you start getting used to it you learn how to play it in its own right.

I was going to pick up a Korg Microkey25 initially, but I'm glad I went with the QuNexus in the end. It's a bit more feature-rich, and ridiculously portable. This thing is so slim my uni bag barely even knows it's there.

  • @TCM: How are you finding the pitch bend nub? Still feels to small and stiff to my finger.

Thanks for the advice, @sinapsya, @dwarman, et. al. Not sure if I will get the iConnectMIDI2+ now, or wait until the 4+ ships some time around October.

@dwarman, So far, I think of the pitch-bend nub as more of a pitch-wobble nub. Since it is so small, the nub's efficacy seems largely dependent on the settings of the device or app it is controlling - it will take some getting used to, and I am looking forward to digging into the customization settings.

  • @dwarman - I haven't played too much with the pitch bend nub to be honest. I find it a bit awkward as there's not much control. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it though, as MountValleyMFR said. I'll have to play with it a bit more.

  • I have a review of the QuNexus here, focusing on iPad use:

    http://tarekith.com/kmi-qunexus-full-review/

  • @Tarekith - thanx, informative.

  • @Tarekith - I enjoyed your review quite a bit. Is there any way we can share QuNexus presets? KMI's website doesn't have a section for this like they do for the QuNeo.

Also, does anyone know what MIDI CC is used for Animoog's channel pressure? I haven't been able to get the QuNexus to control it the way I want (poly pressure that works similarly to the touch-screen keyboard). I did, however, notice that Animoog sends some MIDI CCs on Channel 2...

  • I'm not sure about the QuNexus preset sharing, I would think that would work though.

  • Do you have any presets you'd like to share? :)

  • Re sharing: I have a request in to KMI for their MIDI bulk dump so I can change patch sets on the fly using MIDI Tool Box. At present this information is not published. Other than that, I would guess patch sharing would have to be via host PC editor files.

It's been a couple of weeks. No answer yet.

  • Any update on this yet @dwarman? Anyone else find any links to presets? Sure would be nice if there was an iOS editor available!!

  • No update. I did meet with the NW factor for KNI at the NW SynthFest a month ago or so. But.

  • I just ran across this site. Not much for Qunexus, but hopefully that will get better.

  • Drat, didn't realized I missed the NW synthfest this year. Dwarman, are you talking about Christian Hielman?

  • I haven't found anything on youtube that demonstrates using the qunexus as a drum pad. I think one of the presets is for this but I can't fins any examples.

  • I have one and it works really good for drums. The sensitivity is really very good.

  • And you can dial it in just the way you want too.

  • Just uploaded a preset. Can someone advise if this works for you. If so, any feedback on settings would be welcome.

  • Are you QuNexus users still liking it? I'm tempted by it, but still on the fence... Thanks!

  • Still using it, though only away from studio.

I am selling a like new one (US only) if anyone is interested, PM me. It is cool but I am a guitarist so I have been using the fishman triple play instead.

  • I use mine, but the velocity varies so much from key to key that it is useless for some applications, especially presets with velocity sensitive variable attack curves.

I love that I can take it on a plane, and Jana, but I am very disappointed with how dramatic the velocity varies.

  • I really like the QuNexus for playing synths as it's so expressive and can send multiple CCs at once. You definitely would have to invest sometime into customizing the settings for the keyboard to meet your playing style. The polyphonic aftertouch is great. I've also used the CV feature for controlling hardware too.

  • I use mine all the time. I even sold my MPK controller because I was using the Qunexus so much more, even in the studio. Out of the box I thought it was neat, but not something I wanted to play. Once I dove in and set it up for how I wanted to play it, then it worked great.

The stock set up has some parameters like velocity set too stiff, and others like tilt set too sensitive. Tweak it a bit and you can use a pretty light touch and still have a lot of control.

  • Thanks, all. I actually have an LPK that I pull put on those occasions when I need some quickie keys, but I don't enjoy playing it (and I also never take it anywhere with me, which would be part of my goal with the QuNexus).

It's be great to use the CC out/expression options on the QuNexus too so that I wouldn't have to worry about using the Launch Control too. Do many of you use the CC out (I'd probably edit/assign the CCs, etc. on the computer, as from the manual it looks complicated via the hardware).
