Clean sound from Korg Gadget Rosiaro?

My question: Is a perfectly clean sound possible from any of the Korg Gadget Rosiaro amp simulators? I'm a novice with this and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.

The closest to clean I have been able to achieve is only a still pretty distorted semi-clean sound with VR GAIN set high and GAIN set low to about 9-10 o'clock (any lower and it's too quiet and still distorted). And using one of the Tweed amp simulations.

I'm trying record a Hohner D6 Clavinet. And before anyone questions why I want to play a keyboard through a guitar amp simulator, a Clavinet was made to be played through a tube guitar amp. It has strings, two active pickups powered with a 9 volt battery, and switches to activate one or two pickups and in or out of phase similar to an electric guitar. And the sound making mechanism is similar to doing a hammer on for electric guitars. I'm using a Akai EIE interface.

I also tried my electric guitar (strat copy) and could not get a clean sound.

I've tried several amp and speaker simulations and lots of different settings for VR GAIN and GAIN. And keeping the Clavinet volume knob low. I don't see clipping on any of the meters. I haven't been able to get a perfectly clean sound.

Who knows how can I get a less distorted sound for recording my Clavinet through Rosiaro? Is it just not possible?

  • Don't have an audio interface myself but I've heard some demos I call 'clean'.

Did you also try adjusting the input volume? (under the 'bypass' switch)

  • No, I didn't even notice the bypass switch or the input & output volumes until you pointed it out! Ha!ha! I'll try messing with those. Thanks.

That demo did sound sufficiently clean.

  • Imo clav needs some grit, that is WHY it is run through a tube amp.

I completely agree. I just haven't been able to find a sound that has just enough.

  • Haven't tried it. My electro 5 has 2 great amps for clav. I Always use wah and go for a crunchy sound. Will try running it through rosario at some point but usually what i do with simulators is dial up a sound as clean and full as possible and then use a dirt pedal before it to warm it up.

I have a nord electro 3 HP and agree that the clav and amp sims are good.

Here's a tip, if you haven't already tried it. Use the Clavinet simulations along with the rotating speaker amp with the rotor speed set to STOP. Then you can briefly start and stop the rotor and hear all kinds of different tonal variations with the rotor stopped at various points. The drawback is that it is virtually impossible to get it to stop in the same place if you wanted to find a "perfect sound" again!

Still the Nord never matches the instant concentrated funk that is possible from my Hohner D6 paired with a wha-wha pedal through my Mesa Boogie.

  • Oh cool, so don't even bother with rosario and use one of the boards through zurich. It naturally warms up the signal and has more od if you want it. . Not sure if the 3 has the same amp sims but the twin and champ sims on my electro are heads above any amp sim i have ever used for keys. Rosario is ok, useable, but not in the same league. The only benefit imo is that you can later export it dry and effect it within your mix in ableton or auria or whatever u use. But i usually commit to fx since it shapes so much of how i play the part.
Will the stop trick. I tend to keep the rotary only for organs because it makes anything sound organy and will use that if that's the intent.

Thanks for that tip. It did help clean up some of the overly distorted sound from Rosiaro. The input and output meters on Rosiaro weren't clipping before I lowered the input volume, so I don't understand why it was sounding so distorted before. I'll try to post a recording of the D6 Clavinet later.

And I had also already tried recording the Clavinet through Zurich. Too clean! Ha!ha!

Dont forget to save the program in Rosario after you've dialed in the perfect sound. It also saves the in- and output settings.
Yeah, post a recordindeling if you can.
