ROTOR: "Love This App" Thread
Where my ROTOR HEADS at?
I think this app is really awesome.
Kind of funny, I find that Reactable and Rotor were using abstract shapes and alternative music making GUI for a minute now.
But, ROTOR is still one of my go to apps.
For me, I find that ROTOR has better sound quality than many other apps. Other apps that I need an EQ or compression boost to make it clap, ROTOR does out the box.
Let alone that, it is Universal and it's layout is multi-lateral.
It gives a nice template for me especially because I often "over" play parts and sounds. So, using the framework of corresponding loop availability for sketching ideas is ideal.
Why do you like to use ROTOR?
I have been thinking about more ways I could use ROTOR with some additions, like AU hosting, IAA, and some other things.
I am guessing their are many ideas that could work. We are never short on those......
Comments
I'd love to see how you use this.
I think it's a super cool idea, but I'm at a loss as to how to start.
It seems to thrive on premade loops, and there is supposedly an amazing key detector? But I generally don't make loop after loop and file them carefully. The loops available are OK, but nothing special. The sounds of the synths are OK but nothing special.
I'm sure I'm doing it wrong.
But once KRFT came out, this has never been opened again.
I'm a big fan of ROTOR and was the author of a tutorial on how to use the key detector (which is very useful and cool). That said, KRFT has kinda taken over this kind of experience for more compositional type of work--mostly because the overall UX is easier and the sounds are easier to dial in with KRFT. That said, as @ExAsperis99 mentions, Rotor is a better option for pre-made loop manipulation. It does some of the stuff that people who use Blocs Wave have been asking for...
Once I figured out what I liked about it I just moved all my sf2, ogg, loops and one shots into it- bulk loaded about 4gb of stuff.
Also reorganized my device main page to put loop maker stuff next to it: iSequence, iMPC pro, iElectribe, ED, FunkBox, Egoist etc.
Strengths are sample based: loops, including mangling and otherwise f-ing them up, and sample based instruments and kits (wav, ogg, sf2)
There's a couple little things I'd tweak to the onboard synth but these are small things (bring back the drawable wave oscillator from Reactable)
ROTOR is on my short list to purchase and dabble with.
Rotor is a special kind of app.
In particular, the premade loop comment, I guess that makes 80% of apps.....LOL
Kidding aside, it is a stylistic choice, like most apps.
It is not a grid, for me, I need that for some reason when hearing things.
Like KRFT, this is unique.
I love apps that utilize the ios format. They represent the apps that i dig and/or attempt to dig.
ROTOR is the shit.
Honestly, everything I make becomes a premade loop, so I am good with that.
But it has a synth and amazing sample parameter control that I don't find anywhere else on ios.
The thread relaunched me back into Rotor, as often happens, and I remember that before my recent Caustic binge of 60+ hours I had been on a Rotor binge that lasted even longer.
(Modular based) Sample parameter control is huge with this one, but the synth and instrument voice available are not to be underestimated: user loading .ogg, .wav-based and sf2 voices makes for a huge palette for sound design, and it ships with hundreds of voices (synth and sf2).
And like a few other all-in-ones, it's possible to build a layered voice out of any of those sample-based voices combined with the 4 OSC synth on board.
It's also an AB3 Input and output, so doors are open to including any and all AB capable instrumentation on the device for more voices and more layering, or for processing its own voices though AB3 effects chains.
Do you have a timecard?
I get the hours-on-task thing from my kid when he was gaming. Halo and all that
Rotor was always too unstable on my iPad, so was hesitant to invest much time in it.
Maybe that changed today (Nov 9 2020) — Just noticed the first Rotor update I remember in years, and so far, so good! Seems far more stable from the 15-20 min I’ve dabbled so far. The freeze button on top caused the only crash so far, but everything else is holding up better.
Ok you people, @Littlewoodg @lukesleepwalker @RUST(i)K @ExAsperis99 what now?
Hey, three out of four of you aint bad on the survival board etc, poor old Rusty, hope he's well...
It lives!
Greetings! Bloodied but unbowed here. It has been a while since I Rotored, but only because I’ve been hunting elsewhere in the forest. Rotor has always been great good fun, so much so that I tried a few months ago to convince a couple forum comrades to part with their Rotor puck thingamajigs.
The update, this thread will likely coax me back into the Rotor and away from my present iMPC Pro 2 workflow..
Edit
Having read the thread I opened up on iPhone and it crashed each time I tried to save (3 for 3 including deleting app and reinstalling) so now to try on iPad. Might be due to my not having updated yet to 14
Rotor is like the girl that I dated but I can't remember her name when I see her on the F train! I really liked her, too. Oh, well.
Ha, so true. Not sure the little rotor things would help improve this situation...
Yep...
Tried firing it up last weekend. Had no idea what I was doing. Just like my past relationships too
Love Rotor
Both iPhone and iPad installs crash when saving
Do not loving it as much rn
Anyone else getting the crashes-upon-saving?
Yes I do, and I just reported it too. Hope you do the same. I just bought it so hope for quick reply so I can ask for refund if not resolved. I'm on an iPad Air 2019 iOS 14.2, haven't tried it on the phone (SE 2020).
I didn't get any swift reply from developer as I asked and hoped for. An app that do crash on preset save is pretty useless in my world. Asked for a refund and got it.
Haven’t heard back yet either. I’ve had a few email exchanges with the devs over the years, not always a swift reply but always a reply. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.
Interesting to see that their earlier app Reactable is stable upon saving, on latest OS.
But that one has not been updated in a few years like this one, a week ago or something, right? A petty anyway, I liked what I was able to do and hear but I'm also quite happy I managed to get a refund. Not always that works. Yeah please do let me know if things get updated, thanks
That’s the funny thing, Reactable hasn’t been touched in a long time and is stable, where Rotor is newer, with recent updates and is glitched...
Glad you were able to get the refund, I’ll let you know if a repurchase is worth doing
I think that last update on Nov 4 must have broke it, I’ve not updated on my iPhone and it’s still working on that.
Makes sense
