Anything I can replace my ICM4+ with?

I've had nothing but trouble with this box. Audio crackles despite trying every possible configuration in the software. Sometimes when a lot of audio is being piped through to Live from Gadget (iPad Pro) it completely glitches out and just starts repeating over and over until I unplug the power. The MIDI routing is a PITA and I hate hate hate that I have to go through my MBP and back out into a USB mixer to get audio from my iPad into my monitors.

What, if any, alternatives are there on the market?

I'm running two iPads, MBP (I really want to use this for just recording and video), Xkey 25, Launchkey 49, Launchpad Mini, Circuit, ES2, Monologue and a MicroKorg. My mixer is a Presonus AR12. It does digital audio as well, but not MIDI.

  • I don't know of any hardware alternative, you could use Apples Inter Device Audio Mode, and run Midi via midimux...It's free so you can always check it out. Make sure to create an aggregate Audio device in OS X!

  • Try changing the USB cables. Those devices are pretty sensitive

  • I work with iConnectivity, chaingdogma, and if there's anything I can do to help figure out your issues I'd be happy to. It's certainly not normal for an iConnectMIDI4+ to be crackling and glitching!

However, that model interface was intended specifically for people who already have an audio interface on one computer and want to add one or two more computers to their setups (it supports up to three machines plus Network MIDI to another four).

So your having to use such a convoluted setup to hear your audio is actually a feature rather than a bug! iConnectivity makes three other interfaces that have audio ins/outs built in. I wish you'd asked me about the iConnectMIDI4+ first, because I would have suggest a mio4 plus probably a Connect2|4.

However, the problems you're experiencing are a tech support issue that can be solved.

Hey NIck. I have a thread open on this issue in the iConnectivity Forum. If I can't figure it out, I'll open a ticket.

  • The humble Akai EIE red face.

  • I assume you primarily want to stream from IpadPro to Macbook Pro ?

Do you know about "minidsp UsbStreamer B " ; it's a class compliant USB to 8 channel ADAT interface for @$100 .
It's a shame your digital mixer doesnt have ADAT , so you'll need two UsbStreamers , one for the ipad pro , one for the macbook pro using their respective Usb ports ,then 2 adat cables between them gets you 8 channels bi directional streaming .
As the mac can aggregrate devices , I believe , you could use mixer at same time & could maybe even use Mac as through device to get AD inputs from mixer into ipad Pro if needed.

I have one working perfectly integrating my ipad into my adat based studio .

The B model is boxed , as it's also sold as barebones kit for geek builders .

  • really appreciate knowing about this... no midi of course but this could really be a cheap and robust solution in some cases. i note they have a $35 2ch device too. any idea if they work behind a usb hub?

  • hey chasingdogma, i was going to respond to your thread over at iconnectivity, but i guess i never registered there. Anyway, i noticed you were using "internal clock" as the clock source. Try using one of the usb device ports as clock instead and see if that works. That solved my crackle problems when using the audio4+ with 2 devices, for a while.

honestly it's a real shame about the audio4+, it has the best features of any iOS interface out there, but it really is a huge pain in the ass.

    @wellingtonCres I should've thought to mention I'm running mine perfectly through a
    ( also recommended Plugable 7 usb2 ) MTT (!!) powered hub , so I assume their 2 channel would also work .

I should also have thought to point out , being ADAT , it needs to be clocked , which is done from the "other connected " hardware device being set to either Master or Slave & UsbStreamer adjusts itself to the opposite status internally , ...
so I realise I'm not 100% sure how you would do this with two UsbStreamers , as I haven't actually done this .
There is control software for computer maybe it can be set there . Also when I connect it to Ipad it seems to default to Master . I will have to research more ..
But definitely recommended to integrate with existing ADAT equipment .
