Am i just unlucky or what?
I'm only posting this cause it keeps happening but the last three times I tried to do anything serious with my iPad air one it crashed, apps just vanish from the screen but there still there in the background but are reset to their state when i loaded them so all if not most of the work is lost. The worst was with Patterning, i had a killer polyrhythm going then vamoosh, gone. I was not happy.
Given the rep Apple has for stability and security i'm wondering if there's something going on. A lot of you guys use iPads exclusively so surely can't be getting this. I'm really wary of using or buying any more apps until i figure out what's going on. If it's iOS or whatever i need to consider an alternative as i was thinking about an upgrade as the apps are brilliant (i could use the iPhone but tricky on the smaller screen and not everything's universal).
The apps were Patterning, Takete and AB3 which was really surprising. I know the air 1 is quite old now but i can't see why apps would crash under normal operation, seems to mainly happen when switching apps FWIW.
But this is partly why i was asking about the recovery option in AB3. Ableton Live has the recovery should the worst happen and it's saved my ass more than once so it would be good to have something similar within iOS but i'm not sure how that would be implemented.
Comments
I don't use Takete, but the original Air is still plenty good for most things. Patterning has been very stable for me, and AB3 is still new. I would try a full reset (after backing up) before giving up on iOS.
Most DAWs have recovery: Logic, Ableton, and on iOS, Auria, and I think Cubasis and Garageband as well. AB3 is not a DAW, though: it's kind of an audio bridge turned into and refined as an Audio/MIDI app multi-app manager with added MIDI capabilities. I'm saying that just clarify it's not the same thing to implement recovery to Auria and to AudioBus 3, but I hope it's possible to do it, and that the developers add this feature, if it's not already there (still on AB2 here).
My Air 1 has been acting up today as well. I don't believe in conspiracies but Apple could be doing something in the background to force people to upgrade. Either that or these apps are on self destruct. Weird but I wondered the same thing today. Also who knows if AB3 could also be causing some kind of conflict with apps that have not updated. Who knows but I'll keep it simple going forward and back up often.
Oh hell yah, iOS for running multiple music apps is as flakey as summer dog shit. Creative, 'powerful', fun etc but super crashy and glitchy.
i just upgraded from an Air 1 to a 2017 a couple weeks ago and have been completely glued to it. Recovering from disaster is so much easier, reboots are super fast now and life is much better in that the recovery is not as painful but oh yah expect things will explode into firey buzzing hell so save often, record lots, take notes, because state saving is hit or miss etc etc.
All in all it keeps the app prices down.
@musikmachine here's an important question. When you upgraded your IOS. Did you do an on device update or a wipe and restore using a desktop ? Both IOS and Android devices get funky when you do a major os upgrade using the device itself.
Jajaja, "i don't believe in conspiracy theories but..." I'm totally creating one right now.
I've been getting some strange behaviour recently on my air 1
For example, Midisteps will work for a while and then when i load it, the default blue page will briefly turn brown and then crash to the desktop. Nothing i've tried will fix this except for reinstalling the app
My rotation bug is back with a vengeance on my Air 2, after a period of working properly. It's coincided with update nag pop-ups, and as this happened before I'm starting to think there's a connection. Plus I've got this weird messaging from Blocs when it's not even been loaded.
Wouldn't surprise me if the update stuff Apple loads in without you knowing causes issues along with the pop-up nag.
I've never done this in all the time i've owned mine so definitely worth trying. I'll do this before replying to the rest.
Interesting that others have had similar experiences and i did wonder aobut the iOS update introducing some issues which is a risk with updating.
@gonekrazy3000 good to know, could explain a lot but i always update via the desktop.
@AudioGus what's a 2017?
Cheers!
The new ipad released this year. Just branded 'ipad'. Swapping between apps and setting up elaborate routing schemes is super fast with it.
I still don't really trust iOS multitasking. I think audio production is the only scenario where iOS is heavily multitasked. With a brand new iPad it may feel solid...for a while.
And to the mentioned "conspiracy" regarding the planned obsolescence. It seems like in another life i was able to run several apps simultaneously (albeit glitchy and buggy) on an iPad 2 and make some tracks. Yes i get it, new features etc etc.
But of course Apple has an interest to sell more new devices. They are struggling on the tablet market anyway. So i wouldn't really call it a conspiracy.
iPad Air 1 has 1GB of RAM, I think what we are seeing is increasing memory pressure on the devices as the Audio apps are updated.
Hoping 4GB minimum becomes standard sooner than later.
Could this maybe be this new Link sync conflicting with midi ???
Noticed on my air 2 since i disabled Link i got less crashes. When using cubasis i noticed iaa and audiobus connected apps start to crash when playing midi tracks in looped mode and starts playing from the beginning again.
YES. and AB3 midi vs. core midi. I have a complex routing stopped working. Turned out I needed to open StepPolyArp first and have it receiving midi and SPA running and sending with it....only then could I open AB3.
It isn't solid at all. It is just faster so recovery is quicker.
Well, updating freed about 2-3gb of space and it does seem more responsive initially, quicker load time with the usual apps so good start.
@theconnactic I know AB3 isn't a host but you can create complex chains with it now but I'd have to use that to route into Auria or any app I want to record into which is what I was doing. I'm not even doing anything that complex which is why i posted.
Interesting note about Link, that kinda coincides with my more recent experience. Is there anyway to troubleshoot what's going on?
Maybe we could test without Link?
The rotation bug is alive and kicking. Back on my air 2, latest IOS. I didn't have it for a while but now it happened twice in the last 12hours with restart required both times.
Maybe properly working rotation should be a flagship feature of IOS11? Or did they choose not to sort it out so 11 feels more amazing when out?
just yesterday, this happened to me as well. i was playing with patterning when suddenly my ipad air 1 crashed and rebooted itself. when my ipad came up, it asked me for my apple account, as if i was registering it for the first time. i thought i lost all my apps and everything, thankfully they are not gone.
ipad air 1. ios 9.3.5. patterning latest version.
My Air 1 was becoming increasingly unreliable for music production, although I think this had less to do with any conspiracy theory, more that the apps we're using have become ever more powerful since I got it in 2013 and the poor thing has started to keel over as a result.
My new iPad Pro 10.5 is laughing at everything at the mo, thankfully! Some very complex Audiobus/AUM chains are going off without a hitch.
iOS music making in two words:
Perseverance, adaptation.
er. the Air1 is a 64bit device. why are you still on Ios 9.3.5 ?
Ah, by the way. I played a very late set (3am) at a festival 2 weeks ago. The sync started playing up 2 tracks into the set which made me turn everything off and I had a massive traditional jam with available amazing musicians. Had the been at 1pm as planned it would have been slightly more dramatic (Saturday night etc.).
I'd probably try to restart everything and try to make it work. At 3am I was too tired to even think about dealing with it.
I'd add luck (maybe also folly) to your list.
Fuck!! That's always been my plan though. We also perform in folk clubs and smaller things and give a very traditional performance, so we could go into that repertoire.
I've not had anything go wrong like a system wide crash or loss of sync before, but I've certainly had situations where I've pulled things off by the skin of my teeth and had to make drastic adjustments on the fly to compensate. I always work any setup hard before I'll dare to take it out (and I never use Link on more than one device in a setup), my theory being that any potential problems (and how to solve them) will arise before the gig, rather than during.
I have a big one coming up soon, so let's hope (given the tech centric setting) that the tech holds up!
Prepping for it today!

Well @OscarSouth I haven't had major problems in the past but three months ago my iPad lost connection with the interface mid set (restarted all apps in less than 1 minute). Then I had a similar thing while prepping and then two weeks ago that thing happened.
Unfortunately I'm self building an extension on my house and my head is all in that. I have neither time nor inclination to prep much at the moment which is definitely part of the problem.
To be fair this time I suspect it is a dodgy (genuine) CCK as I've noticed a glitch when moving my iPad while connected to the interface.
Part of me is waiting for Loopy 3 but I know that won't be a plain sail either, with third party issues etc.
Yea, I feel the same about AB3. It's almost updated to the point where I can use it live now, but it's still going to be a giant leap for me.
Ive had crashes galore of single apps since I updated to 10.3.2 a couple nights ago. Could just be coincidence though.
