KORG Gadget iOS vs Mac OS version | Comparison - haQ attaQ

KORG Gadget iOS versus KORG Gadget for Mac? I've received a lot of questions about this lately and so I thought I'd respond with a video in where we are comparing the two versions. Check it out!

  • @jakoB_haQ you can also rename the tracks on mac and this then syncs with the other platforms

  • @jakoB_haQ Thanks for the video. Great to see someone finally doing something about this. Thus far I haven't found one serious review, neither in writing or on video, on the Mac version, which I find very strange, considering this quite a major release from Korg.
Allow me to ask one question, Jakob, regarding the VST's:
Are they comparable to the full versions of their IOS counterparts? Trying to be clear: On IOS there is two versions of Odyssei - on standalone and a slightly crippled version for use in Gadget called Lexington. So is there a full blown Odyssei (as AU/VST) in the Mac version or does it only contain Lexington? Does the question make sense?

All vst's are the same as the gadgets only

Ah, it's actually not a new function. We've been able to rename tracks in Gadget on iOS for a while now. I would like some more categories for the top of the track/song list though. Like a "Vocal". Right now the only choose is Audio.

  • iOS gadget would seriously benefit from those view buttons. Rather than using the back arrow we should be able to navigate directly to where we need to go, i.e. Mixer, gadget, piano roll or song arrangement.

Thanks @jakoB_haQ for a much needed dispel on Mac Gadget. I too am so surprised how Little coverage there's been for this and having bought it recently can say that my hopes for feeling maximally immersed in Gadget in general came true on OS X session number one. It's a beautiful thing.

There's no drop down box on mac you just type in a track name and this then shows up on the synced ios version with the typed in name (see piccy)

  • Hey does anyone else here that has Gadget for Mac experience that it is very high CPU intensive and makes their Mac heat up a lot? I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 16GB Ram and it heats up a lot while running Gadget. I love Gadget on iOS and Mac but it is very power hungry on both. Hopefully Korg addresses this in an update.

+1 navigation could be a lot less clunky

Also I'm curious if the Rosario gadget on Mac can process audio from another vst, or if it has to be through a digital interface.

  • I have the IOS version and I got the Mac version a few weeks ago now and absolutely love it. At the same time I can understand why so many people with the IOS version would see little sense in having both. Let's just say my needs are very unique so having Gadget on the Mac is a huge help to me. Admittedly it didn't hurt that I won an NCAA Tournament basketball pool so I had some money (a lot more than $200) to blow or I may have thought twice about getting it. But now that I've had it for a few weeks I've discovered my suspicions that it would be very useful for me to have this on the Mac had merit so it would have been worthwhile even without that unexpected money.

The lack of coverage on it is surprising and disappointing but in a nutshell it's basically exactly what you would expect it to be on a Mac with a mouse and keyboard, file system, save and open windows, etc. It opens up very quickly, is stable, and works extremely well. And all of the Audio Units just automatically show up in your favorite DAW (GarageBand in my case) without doing anything and work exactly as they do within Gadget.

The only real gripe I might have is there are no discounts for iOS users so I'm going to be faced with a decision every time they release a new paid gadget. I'm still missing Lexington and Milpitas on IOS and haven't been able to convince myself to purchase them even though they've been on sale because I have them on the Mac (Milpitas will be added for free to the Mac version soon). Unless Korg changes their policy on this I'm thinking I might just maintain the full arsenal on the Mac version, since I've been using that version more, and just substitute other gadgets in place of the missing ones on iOS for composing purposes if and when needed. I can then just go back to the Mac version to put the missing gadgets in if I feel I really need to use them for a certain track.

It doesn't bother me that the Mac version is missing some of the functionality of the few gadgets that have standalone versions on iOS. I'm not a synth programmer so I'm content with the basic options the Audio Unit versions provide.

I've also almost exclusively been just using the Mac version anyways since I got it although I have tested the iCloud project sharing feature between both platforms and it works perfectly for me. At some point my usage of the IOS version may increase again but for various reasons right now that's not the case.

    Pretty happy customer here.

    Hasn't been a problem for me on my 20 13 27 inch I5 iMac.

  • I've found the Mac version meets my needs, which is basically Gadget on the Mac. :) Not much to say about it other than that, so why would it be a big news story? I wasn't expecting it would blaze new trails on desktop. What if it was cheaper? I don't know. With pricing, Korg has to balance what would be a positive attention-grabber with what satisfies their bottom line. The initial price was reasonable for me, but I can't speak for the market in general.

The only thing that appealed to me was the Gadget to Ableton Vst Export, i will use the desktop to do the export as all my tracks are in 'the cloud'....

...what i will say is that i just noticed that any Gadget track with milpitas wont open on mac unless you swap it out

  • Bumping this thread for the end of the Korg sale. I’m not sure if their prices return to normal on the 9th (tomorrow) or the day after, but they’re about to go up.

I’m on the fence with Gadget for Mac. $149/£110/€125 seems a fair price for the plug-in collection, especially, plus a cross-platform workflow might offer a creative spurt, but I’ve been avoiding desktop software for some time now. It’s an expensive rabbit hole, and a scarcity of tools is not my problem.

Anyway, the Korg sale’s about to close, so just a heads up.

  • Has anyone with Lexington either on iOS or macOS managed to enter a ‘bend’ from the Proportional Pitch Controller (which on a real Odyssey was known as the PPC) – either drawn in, or by pressing the appropriate place?

Yes, I just tested it — both in stand-alone ODYSSEi and Lexington in Gadget. Works fine. Forgive me if I state the obvious, but it works by sliding your finger up and down, not by “pressing“ since iPads have no press sensitivity. Unless you’re talking about that 3D press stuff that is only available on certain iPhones? As far as I know Gadget doesn’t support that. Perhaps if you described what you are doing in more detail....

  • They should really bring the 4 split views to the iPad Pro. This would be amazing!

    What about on macOS gadget?

    What about on macOS gadget?

I have it working everywhere with a vertical gesture.

The iPad versions seem to let you slide either up or down but, curiously, the Mac version only responds if you click and drag up - both in Gadget and as an AU.

It maps easily to a regular pitch bend, which I prefer.

  • I hadn’t tried sliding my finger or the trackpad up and down within the pad area. That has never seemed to me how to do it at all – after all, it isn’t sensitive to movement across the PPC pad on that type of control on the original, so I hadn’t considered there was such an unusual alternative way of doing it other than just pressing it like normal. I’ve just tried it with the trackpad and it is indeed quite strange, pressing up away from the point where I started the press, instead of in, makes the flat go lower frequency (so the histogram shows a slight downward trace) but the sharp go higher frequency, both with the same action of pressing the pad and then moving toward the top edge of the PPC pad. I noticed it appears on the pitchbend histogram. I’d have never guessed any of this, ever.
