Pricing of IOS apps versus VSTs

  • I couldn't disagree more...
while it's true that Korg and Yamaha/Steinberg use IOS in a promotional way to return their investment, the idea that a big team guarantees software quality is complete nonsense.
    The opposite is the case.

Some of the biggest achievements in Apple developement were done by a handful of individuals, each in his owns domain and responsibility.
Martin Lind and Sean Costello are well known in VST land for their reverbs.
DRC's virtual analog algorithms should make Arturia blush.
Native Instruments has a huge developement team releasing one boring result after the other. Compare their synths to UHe or Guitar Rig to Mike Scuffham's S-Gear.

Microsoft and Adobe produce bloatware for a reason, Apple (on desktop) is following the same paradigm.
Make it complex, so individuals run out of time when they start an enterprise, keeps you in control.

IOS is a specific case: it was planned as a 'low price no service' platform. You pay for an app the amount that's charged for a pizza or Cola and that's about it.
No complaints, no refunds - like it or trash and forget about it.
That was executed about 2 years, developers were supplied with 1st class tools to fill the shelfs a virtual store. Successfull. The 30% were profitable.

When they changed terms and conditions it was no biggie for the majority of 'lifestyle/nonsense' app developers as it wasn't for content carrier apps - but stuff like pro audio is almost killed that way.
But they didn't mind that small segment of a few percent share in the shops's content.

btw my VST world is small:
I arrange and mix in SAW-Studio and the only non-SAW plugins are the effects from Valhalla DSP and the Zynaptiq ZAP suite, occasionally an EQ from TokioDawnLabs.
All this software is by individuals.

For the rest I use IOS and 2 DSP systems, Pro Tools TDM and Creamware Scope, 15-20 years old.

    Regarding the rule from above:
the PT plugins are excellent (by individuals), the DAW system is a piece of crap (and only succeeded due to those great plugins).
SAW was the earliest (Audio) DAW, multitracking when CPUs named Pentium ran at 133 MHZ and (still) is a one man show.
The Scope system was a teamwork of highly specialized individuals and is the most sophisticated piece of software that ever crossed my path.
(it's my digital/analog switchboard, routing latency free between IOS, PT under MacOS9 and the Windoze DAW plus a couple of real good synths)

Call that stuff old and outdated, but it does what it's supposed to do near perfectly - without any need for updates ;)
