I think I've found my workflow

I've been making music with ios apps for about 4-5 years now. My main instrument is guitar, but I use a lot of synth and sample playback apps. Some of my favourites are Samplr, Sunrizer and Beathawk. As long as I've been making music, I've struggled with the tension between my left and right brain moments during the process of being active musically. I'm pretty productive as far as creating small loops and what I call "musical snapshots" and "postcards". However, arranging them into songs has been an ongoing frustrating process for me. Every time I open one of my DAWS (Cubasis, Music Studio, you name 'em) the creative juices stop flowing and I'm lost in a jungle of decisions. What to choose as an intro, what sounds to paste/record next on the time line, what effects to use, etc., etc. With every new DAW that gets released for ios, I get hope that the new tools will help me finally create complete songs and compositions AND have fun doing it.

Tonight I reloaded Fingerbeat again. BANG! It clicked! The tape section with all it limitations and lack of deep editing and mixing options that DAWS like Cubasis have, is just what I need. It minimizes the ammount of decisions I can potentially make and makes me listen. Just listen. Listen what sounds good and commit it to tape. Period. I force myself to restrict myself. Right now its my guitar, Sunrizer and Beathawk with all the soundpacks as my palette of sounds. I either record them directly into Fingerbeat via Audiobus or manipulate them with Samplr before importong them in Fingerbeat. It is the closest to Teeanage Engineerings OP1 on ios that I know of. I mention the Op1, because its workflow has appealed to me for some time, although I don't own the unit.

I know that no one workflow suits all, but I justed wanted to share my story. Maybe it helps some of you to experiment and find a workflow that suits you, without getting stuck in 'conventional' approaches or too many decisions that hinder the creative proces. What a great time to be alive as a musician. Many, many sincere thanks to all the developers and the community that make ios music making a magical hobby!

  • Thanks for the words, I didn't know you could record into Fingerbeat, will be checking that out as I too love the simple apps that keep you focused. Currently I've been sketching the whole track in iKaossilator and then transcribing the parts by ear into a piano roll elsewhere for more sounds. A bit tedious, but so far I'm not minding that as much as I thought seeing as how the song is basically written.

  • That's exactly how I see Looperverse. Simple yet enough tools to just hit record and loop record and loop and bam! Get something going. I was doing that yesterday and once I liked what I had, just sent it to Cubasis.
I kind of with Looperverse had a song mode though to make it even easier to focus.

  • Congrats, Maarten, thanks for sharing with the class. I definitely think you're on to something with restricting your choices and committing to a sound. It's good advice I've seen/heard in a few places.

Are there any advantages that you know of using looperverse over another looping app? Right now I use blocs wave and get along with it okay but am kind of looking for something else.

Glad to know someone else uses FingerBeat it's a really great under appreciated app!

  • For me no one workflow fits all tracks I want to make. It is like cooking. Some are soups, some are salads, some are steak dinners etc.

  • Well, for me BW is awesome in its own way. But I found with Looperverse, I'm able to hit record and keep the insipiration flowing one loop ontop the other. For me I guess it's the linear aspect just clicks, I guess being a guitar player it just clicks. But BW I also love the ability to get a beat going too. I depends what you wanna cook. Salad, soups etc' :)

    Must be dinner time.

  • The thing about DAWs is that they provide access to all stages of an entire project's workflow at the same time , this can destroy productivity if one is not aware of the risks this poses.

If you listen to what any mixing pro has to say, they'll eventually mention the importance of doing this in the right order: tracking, editing, mixing, mastering. Once you start hopping between the steps e.g. mixing before the tracking is finished you are asking for a world of pain and confusion, especially if you realise that this is what you're doing.

So really it's not limitation that helps in this situation: it's doing things in the right order and using limited tech enforces this automatically.

  • @Maarten so cool to hear that you've found yer thang, Fingerbeat is a great one- feature wise it's a really a smart little studio

    ..yes, some are hungry!

  • This is great to hear. Good for you, man. Makes me excited to try other workflows.

No matter what I cook or how I cook it, it keeps coming out tasting like Spam. :D

In that case I would use less Spam.

  • @wim Spam is a delicacy in Hawaii, so maybe you've found your calling. :)

  • Did I say that was a bad thing? B)

  • @wim Spam is a delicacy in Hawaii...

Spam is a staple in HI: it's on the menu at McDonald's.

  • Spam is the poor man's pate.
