I don't think it's defunct. In the past the website had several downtimes due to technical problems of the web provider, sometimes several days long. I think John is back soon with his great blog.
He is moving to another server this weekend. Hope it ends well.
He said in his newsletter the he is...
"...rebuilding the site on a different server. Hopefully, things will be operational again by Monday (fingers crossed)..."

Likethe terminator, he will be back...just not quickly. Site still off line. All there was over the weekend was a blank page, and now it's back to 'unable to establish connection.'
Hopefully, the problems will soon be sorted.
