Training on iOS grid performance instrument controllers
I have an iPad mini 4 with 16 gigs of ram. It has been pretty much an expensive paperweight with such limited ram. I would like to try using it as a controller for live performances of poetry using the controller to create looped background music. My plan is to only use loops that I create in Logic Pro X.
I need training and community to develop this approach.
Any suggestions?

Your device has a 16gb storage drive. This is different than memory. 16gb is enough to make music if you're careful with your app downloads.

AND DUE DILIGENCE and STRATEGY
Do you have an iPhone?
Do you use Audiobus remote?
Do you know about Sidecar?
Both Blocs and LP are free downloads but require an IAP to import audio files. Garage Band is free and has a grid-based instrument (Live Loops) which allows you to import audio.
If you use mostly synthesis-based instruments and stay away from huge sample libraries 16Gb will get you a loooong way.
you could also give LooptunesHD or LooptunesDJ a try. Let’s you create loop based songs really fast, and you can browse loops online, and keep your iPad’s storage usage low.
