Need that "Blade Runner" sound.

With Blade Runner 2049 coming in October and the original soundtrack being a major electronic masterpiece, I'm deathly interested in getting those darker-sounding atmospheric pad sounds (and "brass lead" sound) in my EDM productions. I know if I wanted to get those sounds, I'd buy a Yamaha CS-80 outright just so I CAN have those sounds, but since I don't have a spare $19,000 laying about, can someone tell me which iPhone synth would be the closest bet to sounding like the CS-80?

I have a fair few synths, but not sure if any of them would be sufficient at getting "the sound". (I'm also aware of Arturia CS-80 VST, but am breaking away from PC producing.). Anything under $50 works for me. Thanks mates. :)

  • AniMoog.

  • I always seem to come up with science fiction type of sounds with Wavemapper, which has an iPhone equivalent: Minimapper.

Model 15. I think theres even a couple packaged presets referencing the movie. Very good at those woozy pads.

  • Virsyn Tera Synth maybe

  • DRC is also a very good choice due to its ease of programming. If presets are your thing, then several from the new outer space pack will get you there.

  • Synthmaster Player - there's an IAP pack that has some Vangelis patches. A number of them are from Blade Runner and they have the exact brass patch you're looking for.

  • The best one is 'pro keys' Blade Runner patch for that brass sound.

  • The blade runner patch in sunrizer is a great recreation of that lazy saw lead sound

  • How dare you....this place was my safe haven B)

I'm almost all in with that Dream. I've been waiting out the DSI Prophet Rev2, but its delay after delay and, well...

Back to this topic. Definitely Model 15. Also getting some searing Brass leads lately with DRC; emphasized greatly by its reverb modulation and output saturation. Polysix from Korg can also be coaxed into some nice brass-y stuff. And LayR as well, due to the many ways you can purposefully modulate the right amount of inconsistencies needed to drift the detunings and envelopes for these types of analog sounds. That, and the fact you can stack and detune as many oscillators as your device will allow can generate some gigantic tones with a lot of subtle drift and movement.

  • I've produced some very Vangelis sounds with Poison 202, the architecture is not unlike a CS-80 in that you can have two separate synth channels making up the one sound - if you set each with its own lfo at a slow but different rate and not too much, you get that slightly unstable sound.

I made a demo with Vangelis sound a couple of years ago with Pro Keys

  • Mitosynth has lots of Blade Runner type sounds.

  • Sunriser has a blade runner preset also

  • in TC11 it's called 'Electric Sheep' ;)

And this. Especially in the additional (free) packs

  • Pro Keys isn't available in the U.S. App Store and doesn't appear on BeepStreet's website. Does anyone know if it's gone altogether?

  • @kgmessier yes it appears to be gone:(
Glad i have it backed up.
Its a real shame as it sounds super rich and quite excellent.

There are some Vangelis patches in the "Historic Synth Giants Vol 2" in-app purchase in Synthmaster Player, but I don't own it, so I don't know if there is anything from "Blade Runner" in there .

Unearthed Sampling has created a very inexpensive Kontakt Virtual Instrument called Esper Noir which is dedicated to recreating the CS-80 sounds used on "Blade Runner," including pads, leads, and percussion. I think it's pretty impressive and it only costs 12 British pounds. It was recorded from an actual CS-80.

If you don't own the full version of Kontakt, you can only run it in demo mode in the free Kontakt Player for 15 minutes. Lots of people work around this by freezing their tracks.

The Unearthed Sampling site is here
    http://www.unearthedsampling.com/esper-synth

you can buy it at Kontakt Hub
    https://www.kontakthub.com/product/esper-noir/

  • The Bladeruner preset in Pro Keys identical to Sunrizer as far as I know.

Synthmaster Player Historic Synth Giants Vol. 2:

You can hear the patch called BRS Blade Runner at 2:52, and there's another patch called PAD Blade Runner at 7:08. There are at least 2 other Blade Runner specific patches in there.

Holy crap this thread got popular, lol. I'll be checking all of these out, although I may hold off on Synthmaster Player given it's a little higher priced. Probably not going to pursue the Kontakt no matter how good it sounds given I'm iPhone-based (using the iPad for mastering).

However, this was my blatent excuse to nab Sunrizer XS (as I already have Sunrizer on the iPad but wish to get Blade Runner sounds on my iPhone).

@LucidMusicInc M1/Darwin? That'd take a minute to dive for sounds. Any good patches/cards you can recommend? Cheers.

I'll be sure to post whatever I find out/make. By the way, on the side note, I just wrote UVI to see if they can get a Sounds of Vangelis/Blade Runner expansion pack into Beathawk. Fingers crossed!

M1 is just a great all in one option for the sheer number of presets you get. A lot of them sound the same but depending on your mood any one of them can act as a catalyst for a song.

  • i feel like iM1 is more redolent of later Vangelis eras. For better or worse.

Thanks mate. Well, I love the hell out of Beathawk, and I love the hell out of Blade Runner. Technically, I could make those tones using the synths and presets and techniques mentioned above, import a sustained note into Beathawk, and create like that, but just having it done professionally as a purchasable IAP expansion would be so much better.

    @LucidMusicInc

M1 is excellent for sketchpad stuff no doubt. I cross-installed it into my iPhone in the form of Darwin. However, I don't recall there being any Blade Runner sounds, but man. I'm with you on it being a good sketchpad and also good for final mixes and neo-90s EDM.

    @JonLewis

I think Vangelis might've used the original M1 for pad sounds, or maybe worked with Wavestation instead.
