Got my Blocs Wave & Patterning & Figure groove going, bout now what? Workflow advice appreciated!

Bonjour!

Ok. So I got this nice groove going in an even nicer garden on holidays in France. The Groove is build up by 3 apps:

  • 4 loops in Blocs Wave
  • a melody line in Figure
  • 5 or 6 drum patterns and some fills in Patterning

They are now all linked through Ableton link. So far: really great fun. But now I want to transform it into a track: some arranging, build ups, drops, intro's, that kind of stuff. What are my options? Preferably I would like to do that in one iPad app, and even more preferably, an app that I could export from to Ableton live, if it turns out i have something nice going on. I am starting to get pretty good on the individual apps, was already handy enough in Ableton, but I am hoping for a step in between before reaching for my laptop or PC...

so... any tips, tricks, ideas or insights are highly appreciated!

Cheers and Bonne Journée

Erik

  • Do you need to preserve the midi data?

  • Do you have a DAW on your iPad? Seems that is what you would need to start arranging it into a complete track.

You could technically use Gadget since it has ableton live export. Although I have tested it and it works, I do not have a full version of ableton live so I am limited to 8 tracks. Not sure how gadget or ableton would handle having over 8 tracks. I assume it would work just fine but cant say for sure.

Bounce each of your loops down as audio files into audioshare or dropbox and then import them into Zurich in gadget. Start arranging. You could then use the rest of gadgets to create drops and such. It would be more like working with Ableton lives clip view instead of the linear view.

As far as a DAW with ableton live export. Not sure if one exists. I read through the major ones and no mention of it. Especially since most of the DAWs have a PC/MAC counterpart that they would want you to use instead of Ableton live.

This definitely gives me some ideas for a little video series.

  • Yeah, to arrange and further mess with what you have, exporting the tracks to Dropbox is handy, then import to Cubasis or Auria Pro. If you have one or the other. If not, then the pair are really head and shoulders above the others. See the various reviews for why.

Export the audio from Patterning and Figure....you may want a few variations with different drums muted from patterning.....
Import them into blocs wave and add them to your project alongside your other loops.....make different sections in blocs wave for you intro etc...
You can always use link to sync further apps in order to make more loops for your project.

    You can then

Export the whole lot from blocs wave into the Launchpad app...and jam away on the pads and find the right arrangement and build ups etc.....even make a recording of your live performance. You can go back and forth between Launchpad and blocs wave to make adjustments or add/remove loops etc...
You can export the project to Ableton from blocs wave if you want to do a 'fixed' arrangement.

    OR

Export from blocs wave to Ableton and carry on in there.

    OR

Export from blocs to dropbox and then import all the samples/loops into the iOS DAW of your choice

Personally I use the first method all the time, I have found it to be by far the most productive and satisfying....

I have cubasis... and I have tried your metod.. but cabasis does seem a little step back in terms of speed for arranging... nice for adding extra stuff thoug .... thank you for your reply! much appreciated!

I use gadget all the time for making more songs, as compared to grooves... I can indeed import the audio tracks into zurich.. interesting option, thank you!

Pretty sure GarageBand (free with iOS) should work as a DAW then.

Also, where are the photos of the French garden ;)

I think this was the step I was looking for! This is fast, easy and keeps the same inspiration flow going! Nice! Thank you so much!
One more question: do you label the drum tracks you import "imported" or "drums"?

I label them as drums.....this way I get the green colour on the pads in Launchpad....it is the category of the loop that controls the colour of the pad.
As long as you do not specify a Key when importing the drums they will not get transposed if you change the key of your project..

    And, your welcome :)

  • IMHO, if you don't need midi and you have the audio the way you like it, just get it to a PC daw at this point. Once there do some mixing, arranging, editing etc then...

...consider bouncing some temp tracks/samples back to iPad (either in Cubasis or Blocs etc) and doing more overdubs with other apps, additional FX etc. and then back to PC daw. I do this all the time. In the end I will never have a single process and always switch it up.

You are welcome. Cubasis has its quirks, but is a superior tool for sequencing and adding effects to your tracks. BTW, the Launchpad solution also sounds good to me, for immediate results. Good luck.

  • I would also consider integrate all your apps into AUM and maybe mix and record freely some patterns and export them to your PC...or even Cubasis

This. That's why asked about midi data.
My contribution: buy a novation launch hardware of your choice and enjoy! (I have launchkey61 mk2 and wondering about launchcontrol to djing like setup...)

  • Just record all the loops from the other apps into different banks in blocs. then export the blocs project using ableton export to Dropbox.

i was looking at that, but can blocs record from other apps? i can only find i records via mic or soundcard

It Records when routed via AudioBus. I've been doing this this morning, recording Patterning, Egoist, ElasticDrums and Mood Model 15 into BlocsWave and doing my arrangement. The instruments are all hosted in a single Channel in AudioBus and BlocsWave is my Recorder.

  • Also with AUM/AB2...

  • Blocs can be put as an output in Audiobus, with the other app in the input. You can record into it that way. However, if there's any way to export from apps that's usually the easiest. Others may differ in this opinion. My preferred workflow is to export from one app, into AudioShare, for trimming if needed to make perfect loops, then import into Blocs.

One nice thing about using AudioBus to record into Blocs is the AudiBus transport bar lets you select the pad to record into, and also start recording from within the program that you want to record. There's a video someone posted on the about doing that. I think from Gadget to Blocs. I don't have time to hunt for it at the moment though.

Similar to this but I make each instrument a channel in audiobus into aum so I can have more control over their volumes and add effects and then route them all into bus a. Then in the last audiobus channel i have an aum bus port 1(a) into blocs recording.

oh man that works extremely fast as well! nice.. thank you!

  • It would be so much easier if blocks wave had a record pause mode...

Then you could just press the AB master start and record it all in sync so easily.

  • True... but I am stil having lots of fun as is... and that's what counts, right?
