OT. Anyone with a Korg R3?

Hi,
I have iVoxel which is very good vocoder but I can get only 2-3 variations. I was looking for hardware (cheap) solution and found a Korg R3 synth.
I already own an Akai Miniak (same great VA engine with Alesis Micron/ION) but the vocoder part is not good.
I am not interested in the R3 synth sounds at all (most ipad synths cover me) ,but mostly on the vocoder part. Any feedback/tips?

I had one and thought the vocoder was good. It's kinda pricey, though...if that's the only thing you're after, I think there are simpler dedicated boxes that will do a better job like maybe an EH Voice Box.

By the way, did you check out VoxSyn by Virsyn? iVoxel is kinda limited compared to that...

Watched some videos for VoxSyn ,but it didn't sound musical enough. iVoxel is limited but has less artifacts.
The R3 I found is so cheap (lower price than EHX Voice Box) ,so I can resell it easily if I don't like it ;)
Can you recall how many user patches you can save in the Vocoder section?

  • I have an R3 (though haven't really touched it since going iOS). All 128 patches can be overwritten with user patches and the Vocoder can be used on any patch.

The synth is quite capable of some amazing sounds, though I hated about two-thirds of the stock factory sounds. The are quite a few fantastic free libraries and sounds that can downloaded for the R3, and the library management and editor software makes getting 128 great sounds that you like pretty easy.

Only downside is that there have been QA issues with a lot of R3's. For me it was the 1/4" outputs which required sending the synth back to Korg for fixing twice (fortunately it was under warranty).

Thank you! Although I don't plan making 128 vocode patches I was afraid it was limited to 8 (8 per bank)

  • The USB port came out on mine, and I had a few iffy moments with the outputs now that you mention it. Not as rock solid as some of their gear...

  • If you found one for cheap, I'd say go for it. As others have stated, you can save vocoder patches to all 128 preset slots if you want. The synth sounds aren't much use to you now but it's a solid VA so some day down the road, you may be grateful for it!

It's also a good MIDI controller if you can get past the paltry number of knobs and poor build quality (esp. on the jacks and knobs). The keybed seems fine enough.

I've still got mine in near-perfect condition after about six years, but I dont gig with it or ever move it more than a few meters at a time so YMMV.

  • Great sounding VA but poor quality hardware with issues as others have mentioned. The mod wheel and pots act up in the hot weather for me. I never used the vocoder. The original MicroKorg might be better quality. I have an ms2000r which has a nice vocoder.

  • Ok got it yesterday and

    • The sounds are ( polite mode on ) definitely not my liking. ( and few FX are worthy )
    • The Vocoder IS great. Basically you can vocode your voice with every complex patch , which means there are endless variations, but :
    • Programming is painful. The editor is old and the tiny windows don't help, editing on the R3 is not easy .
    • The hardware quality is hmmmm.... not great for keeping it as a controller. I will sell it along with my Miniak :p ( goodbye hardware )

Thank you for the feedback :)
