Alternatives to iConnectAudio?
To connect audio of 2 ios devices
Comments
I think there is nothing similar aside a mac with musicIO/studioMux...
What i do now when i need the second ios device is just use link and physical audio out from one into the other.
There isn't any alternative when it comes to connecting the two digitally. but you can do what @vpich said and connect them physically. won't really help if you're trying to do 4+ audio streams between the 2 devices though.
the iconnectaudio is for better or worse, a unique product. You could reproduce it with two audio interfaces with digital ins and outs, as well as analog, maybe a master word clock, and a midi interface, but it still wouldn't work as well. I'm really glad they made it, and am happy with how mine works. I feel like moving the sound digitally from device to device, rather than going through D/A, A/D cycles makes it sound really good, or rather, keeps it sounding extra good.
Agreed. It has it quirks. And it can be maddening at times. But when it works there's nothing quite like it. And at least for me I have a rock solid setup at this point that works 99.99% of the time. With the 0.01% usually being something stupid I did. I'm actually hoping they release a version that has at minimum 16 analog inputs and 8-10 outputs that are dc coupled with everything else that the Ica4+ has. Would gladly pay upto 1500$ for it. Oh the modular fun that can be had if they do that. A mother32 or a 0-coast would just love those CV outs. And a drumbrute would love the 16 inputs.
I also have to say it's worth every penny! It has changed my way of producing and ability of playing live. Together with AUM I can use the iPad as a multieffect on different channels in logic. The preamps are ok for live but for recording I just made an aggregate interface with my apogee and the iconnect. With this I can even use the apogee preamps and route them directly into the iPad to record it in logic. Simply great!
I think I found the perfect alternative.
Check it.

I am shocked I never caught this item
I have the AudioHub 2x4, and an iCM4+. Do note the 2x4 only has 500ma ports, so you won't get a charge without the CCK. If you have a Mac, you can connect as many iDevices as you want with the IDAM/Aggregate Device. For that matter, if you have a PC or Mac there are quite a few ways to route audio between the two. There are other options, but they are far more expensive - There's definitely room for competition in the space tho - I wish there were better alternatives.
well, there's nothing particular in the video.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
You could do exactly the same with the first Alesis ioDock and an iPad One
(theres's only midi routing, no audio - the latter is plain analog)
Any class compliant USB interface with an additional USB midi port should behave the same (imho).
I don't see any digital alternative to the iCA stuff, but trying to streamline my own setup I've done something similiar based on Adat/analog connections because I prefer the Audient preamps of the ID22.
You'll love the iCA's routing matrix (which seems trouble for many users) once you try the same with real world cabling.
This doesn't have XLR inputs, so you can't plug a guitar or a mic into this device. You can't add phantom power. It doesn't even have a knob to adjust the volume from whatever you are plugging in to the RCA inputs--just low and high switch. There are many products out there that offer more functionality for less money.
But it doesn't do what iConnectivity products do, which is to let you play on your MIDI keyboard and have your iPad sounds go into your computer DAW.
It does look like a great product for a gigging musician, which is how they are marketing it.
The particular thing that caught my attention is the USB-B output to PC.
There are 3 USB inputs on front.
Theoretically, can you plug iPad into one of the USB ports and plug the Novation 2/4 in PC?
Do you have 2 way communication between iPad <>PC? Audio and midi?
The Alesis IO hub (that I own) works totally differently. MIDI in/out and audio out but sending only. Can't connect to PC... I haven't been able to get two way traffic between iPad/PC.
Can this Novation audio hub do it? Is iPad recognised on PC and usable in Ableton?
the Novation doesn't transfer audio via USB, otherwise he wouldn't have used the RCA outs for analog connectivity.
It' acting as an audio interface for the iPad/iPhone only.
Otherwise it would qualify as 'multi-host', which is an exclusive feature of iConnectivity still.
@Rustik. I own the novation audiohub as well. (Its literally in my profile picture lol). not sure how it would replace my Ica4+. it absolutely sucks for recording mic's or instruments since it has no preamps at all and no phantom power. all it can record are line outputs. its a useful audio interface for when i'm travelling but never sees use in my studio. It also cannot connect to 2 ipads at the same time. using a stereo=>Rca cable you can record 1 ipad into another. but it will cause the audio to not be as pristine since you're going Digital=>analog=>Digital. also. there is no midi between the 2 ipads.
to answer your question you can technically do this using studiomux on the ipad connected into the audiohub. (but the results are identical to connecting it directly to the pc/mac) but the latency is just garbage compared to using the Ica4+. i've actually deleted studiomux at this point since i just do not use it.
