Edit velocity in Cubasis

Guys, I found it is very difficult to edit the velocity of the note in cubasis, the velocity bar under the midi editor is so small that I can't drag it sometimes, it is kind of frustrated when GarageBand can do better in this... Do I miss something? Anybody can help?

  • Zoom in makes easier. But you're right GB is better for midi edit just not better enough.

  • @RockingGarage It works a little better if you zoom all the way out, but I think that's something on their update list. Hopefully it's in upcoming update.

  • Ok, then have to wait then... What is the button beside the piano roll in midi editor? There are Lock, Vel, Move, move, length and sound....
I know the lock and sound, what are the buttons for?

You just open my eyes to something. If you hold the velocity button down, you can change the velocity of highlighted notes, tap on note and a white slide will appear on right side drag note up or down to change velocity. Remember it only works if you hold it down and lock is off.

  • @mgmg4871 is correct. This is how to properly do it, and it is quite easy if you do it this way. This was actually the key feature that made me move from Meteor to Cubasis. It makes it SO easy to adjust the velocity! If you want hard (or nearly impossible, try doing it in Meteor with any sort of accuracy).

  • This is better when hold the Vel button... Thanks...

Yes, this works for moving notes up or down, changing length, and velocity. I don't do much editing in midi but if its this easy I might start. I used Meteor and got frustrated with their editor also, but it did force me to play more accurately. Gotta start reading help manuals throughout.

  • In short:
    1. Select the note you want to adjust.
    2. Hold down the velocity button on the left while adjusting the volume with another finger.

  • This was THE thing that made me make the move. It is SO much better. :-)

I just discovered you can also hold down the velocity button and change velocities from the bar. It's much faster and you can move or change multiple notes. May take a little practice though.

Edit: scratch that. It's hit or miss.

Also, if you need a bigger piano roll window, since it can become a mess and quite fiddly, you can just drag it out to cover the whole screen by tap & drag above the lock icon and the keys. It's another one of those functions that might not that obvious at first. The audio edit window can be dragged out as well btw.

By the way am I the only one that wants to double tap to activate the selection tool, instead of constantly be using the toolbar?

  • Another thing that you can do, if you want to move multiple notes at the same time by the same amount of velocity, you can use the selection tool and select multiple notes, and once they are highlighted you can then press the velocity button and then adjust the velocity. (at least I seem to remember that this can be done....).

  • Thanks @ChrisG. Would have never found that.

  • The manual is not complete--it has the basics, but not all of the secrets are found within its pages. It may need to be updated.

  • @Audiojunkie That's what I though happened earlier but couldn't recreate it. Thanks.

  • Wow. You can drag the keys and pads to full screen also.

  • Yep. I posted that here quite a while ago. When checking out presets, you can also drag out the presets screen while playing with the synth. There are a couple of other things you can drag around too. Overall, there are A LOT of undocumented things that help a lot! :-)

Thanks @mgmg4871 didn't know about the keys and pads lol

Hopefully Steinberg have plans on integrating things like double row keys, or keys on lower half and an x/y pad or two on the other half (when automation and all that comes)

  • Nice tips guys!

  • You can also minimize the Micrologue Synth.

  • edited September 2013

Yep thanks. When it's minimized, or maximized for that matter, it would be nice to have a swipe gesture on Microlouges topbar that let you navigate between it's various windows by swiping instead of using those tiny buttons.

  • Wow....that full screen editor was what I looking for.... Really thanks to you guys...

  • Can we get a noise gate on the amp Sim

  • @keenyrox You can leave a request on Steinberg forum when it's back online. They actually read the request.

  • We really need to sought a sticky out for tips and tricks. There have been a few things over this last 10 months that need to be collated...a,... 'how to'....it's all here in the forum but we could(should) bring it together as a guide...??..I know we already have a tips and tricks section but stuff is still spread about.if anyone felt it could be pasted into a post???....sorry for being weak and not doing it myself, but if anyone wants to pipe up..my vote is for JMS-Morris or flo:)

  • I was thinking of starting an iOS Music Wiki to cover just this kind of thing... But it would definitely have to be user supported, meaning you guys would have to chip in and add tips and app guides since I'm still learning a lot of this too :)

  • You have my support.

  • Waiting on confirmation email from Wikia for new wiki signup :)

  • To all: the tips and tricks in this thread have made my musical life even more comfortable :-) Many thanks to you guys!
