Apple ‘totally undersells’ the iPad Pro’s new processor
Apple on stage said the A10X is 30% faster than the A9X chip in the previous iPad Pro generation. That number is accurate only for the single-core performance, as fresh tests are revealing. The A10X hits 3929 in Geekbench 4 compared to 3031 for the A9X chip. That’s a 30% increase in line with Apple’s estimates.
But on the multi-core side, things are even better. Apparently, the A10X chip goes all the way up to 9372, which is a whopping 82% more than the 5138 score that an A9X iPad Pro might reach. That’s something Apple doesn’t mention on its site, although it does note that the iPad is “more powerful than most PC laptops.”
Sure, these are synthetic benchmarks that do not replicate real-life use. But Apple’s A-series chips have no rival in the mobile universe. Not even the latest chips from Qualcomm and Samsung can outperform the iPhone 7 in single-core performance — which is what matters most to Apple considering its “lie.”
But the fact that the A10X chip is capable of such performance is very exciting. First of all, a new chip generation is around the corner, the A11 that’ll power 2017 iPhones and should be even faster than the iPhone 7’s chip. With that in mind, the A11X going into next year’s generation of iPads should be incredible.
For comparison purposes, the entry-level 15-inch MacBook Pro hits 4255 in the same test, and 13727 in multi-core speeds. It sure looks like a MacBook Pro running on a custom A-series chip is just around the corner
So I wonder if something like Cubasis running AUs takes advantage of multiple cores or if multiple cores would simply be used to distribute tasks by multiple apps?
30% more in cubasis isnt enough for me to pay the extra dough over the 2017 ipad but 80%... yes... perhaps for sure.
I would love to know more about how cores are used in our little world. @devs @Lfs
But it can't do hyperthreading and there are a lot other things. ARM is still far away compared to my 4 years old i7.
The thing i ask me too is multi-core support from apps.
So if you use several instances inside a DAW or different apps, the load will be shared across the cores.
But i don't know if a single synth could use multi-core.
I need that f.e. in some of my mac synths/FX, otherwise they wouldn't run.
Geekbench is not the best to compare that anyway.
Any idea when reviews will start showing up for the new Pro 10.5? Really thinking of getting one tomorrow as my Air 1 is nearly 4 years old now!
Since each AU is run in a separate process on iOS, I would hope these are all distributed in multi-core fashion.
Interesting to hear y'all out... many top expert comments to choose from - thanks
However... I've decided to sell my 12,9" and buy the new one.
Life's to short for hesitation, especially for musicians
What I heard, somewhere on the Interweb, a YouTube review I think, was that the 10.5 and 12.9 both have 4gb ram. So, the big boy must be using more of that to push pixels around. Especially at speed.
As for displaying two iPad apps, it's important to find out of this is in landscape mode only, or also portrait style. In other words, two IPad apps side by side in the 12.9's landscape orientation, but displaying at they would with a smaller iPad in portrait orientation. If the split is available with 12.9 in portrait orientation, but with split horizontally across the screen, that would make a difference. Does anyone know for sure?
split screen is always vertical.
I still wonder about cpu throttle the most. While it´s easy to achieve high benchmarks in short time it can be complete different with longer sessions in a music production.
Even my i7 quadcore struggles after a while and i have to start to bounce.
I think it might be similar to previous versions.
Here also the 12.9" might be better for longer sessions.
I spent about 7 hours putting together a 28 track project in GarageBand on iPad Pro 10.5. It never broke a sweat. Vocals need Elastic pitch so I'll have to import into Logic to finish, but if it weren't for that I think I could finish everything on iPad.
Up until now I've only been dabbling with little 7 or 8 track experiments on iPad.
Future is bright!

Ah, that is a pity.
But Insuppose it isn't such a big deal, as so few apps actually support the feature. Or, does some IOS 11 wizardry enable all apps to be in a split screen?
Dude does that rock band keyboard do good old midi usb? because oh my god that’s cool. Also those are some great prices!
I sold my air 2 64 for £270 yesterday so you can imagine how itchy my hands were to upgrade! I was going to wait until after Christmas for something below £500 but then I just made a lazy bid (didn’t even check sellers feedback or description!!) and won!
£200 for an upgrade seems quite steep since I generally add maximum £100 but I guess this is quite a step up from the air2 so no regrets.
As far as rock band keytar, yes it was such a fluke. I’ve bid something like £8 and ended up wining for £1.04. Thant’s ridiculous. They actually sent via parcel Force 24 which is around £12. Crazy economics.
When I was buying it I didn’t realise that in fact it is the dogs bollocks of iPads at this moment in time.
I'm loving the 12.9 2017. I wouldn't want to go back to smaller format for my main ipad although I could see myself getting a 10.5 as a secondary next time around
Never Mind The Bollocks
A great buy, indeed! I can never go back from 12.9 though...
Since my Mark 1 is still performing like a goddess, I’m waiting for the next version.
But I’m also eagerly awaiting the new Mac mini 2018, being a big mini fan.
I had 12.9 for about a week. Couldn’t get used to the size, just felt wrong...and heavy. I think 10.5 will be the sweet spot for me I’m just trying to keep my expectations low since specs on paper can be so misleading. I’d be a happy man if I could only run one extra effect in my Audiobus preset.
It’s made a big difference to me
And just as much the extra storage space. It felt quite large at first, but now it just feels normal, but I kept the Air 2 for when smaller size is best.
Yes as regards to specs, I was initially slightly disappointed as audio is improved less than GFX performance but it's still a great improvement if not yet on par with laptop etc
Give it another couple of years and you'll be able to plug your pro 12.9 directly into your minimac , run ios on it and interact with it on the 12.9 screen... or maybe just run osx on the big bastard
All I want now is to copy down a score lol
Hey, got my new 10.5 today and the bugger is still in cellophane. I mean, it’s never been touched! So basically it is one of the few 10.5s around with IOS 10.3.3 on it!
I’d love to keep it that way but am I missing out on apps that are iOS 11 only? What are they anyway? I mistakenly thought AB3 was one of them but I just downloaded it and it works!
Any advice guys?
I think Rozeta is iOS 11 only due to AU Midi
Au midi, Files app, dock bar make a big difference.
Yeah, Model 15 AU is supposed to be better as well, and the GarageBand recent update.
To my mind BM3 is better under iOS 11, because of the files app. It gives another easy way to get files into the app.

Update. These gizmos do work better with the latest IOS.
My well documented issues are much improved, I’m convinced because Apple included some kind of IOS based workaround. So if you play it safe, being the owner of an early iPad Pro 10.5, it could save you problems.
And you can use the latest apps!
