KQ MiniSynth (Ryouta Kira)

Anyone using it. It’s the only AU I don’t have any thoughts on it before I buy

If you're into modular synths, it's currently the only game in town for AUx, and likely will remain the bargain. The dev is on the case updatewise, and the recent iteration ships with nice new presets by Christian Thompson (for reverse engineering if you're a newbie like me), a cloud share for presets, and the thing sounds good.

ripplemaker's is stupid dope so im going to have to buy it if you make that statement.

My strategy as usual is get 'em all. Get the bargain first, if you like old school stylie (a deep cable patchin' modular, can run 11+ Osc at a time, for $5...). Ripplemaker is definitely next on the list but it won't be $5 bucks...

  • This thread prompted me to revisit it for the first time in a loooonnnnnggggg time. It now sounds quite good. Also, a small footprint. I will be using it far more often.

Yep the audio engine did get a tweak...and hearing what C. Thompson did with it sets the bar.

  • its definitely a bargain at that price and the patches by C. Thompson sure sounds good.

  • By the standards set here for app collection I have a very selective set, this one is among the owned :)

    good to know

Bought it a long time ago, but remember there where no or hardly presets and in that case not something for me. Maybe that changed and has it a lot of presets. Especially with complex synth nice preset are important and I certain not only for me.

    Awesome

Love this synth. AU and a small footprint and it keeps improving

does anyone have a video of how the interface looks like when used as an AU ? is it still fully modular ?

No video, but It's zooms and scrolls like crazy for full acesss:

The zoomed out version isn't too useful but I wanted to show you both ends of the scaling...
It's actually the most accessible UI for AUx that I know of

  • Love modular synth possibilities. Picked it up last night!

ok. you have definitely piqued my interest now. hows the Au save system ? is it host independant ? as in can i save a preset in AUM and use it in Auria Pro like the Brambos apps ?

Your presets can move among iterations (standalone, iaa, AUx) via a copy/paste to clipboard in-app, also there is iCloud sharing across devices (it's universal)

@Littlewoodg ok. loving the sounds it can produce. but i'm severely baffled by what parameters it exposes to AUM when used as an AU. what exactly are MD5_0 - MD5_7 ?
    macro controls ?

No idea. Same appears in Modsteps included mapping for KQ. I haven't messed about yet with these.
Via email The dev is very accessible

could you ask him/her how exactly i can automate parameters from a host ? as much as i love the synth not being able to automate parameters is actually bugging me :/ even if its just 8 macros that would be preferable to not having any control.

  • wow. that being said i just love this thing. the zooming and moving around works marvelously in the AUx.

    Pretty damn cool for $6
I wrote him an email and fooled around in Modstep a bit, automating the program change parameter was hilarious fun

I'm pretty sure those 8 parameters are definitely macro knobs. the apps to well thought out for it to be a random addition. just have to figure out how to get it to actually do anything.
also. Feeding this into AudioDamages Grind and Eos gives sublime results :dizzy:

heck. the not a melotron preset + Eos is magic.

Omg. is @RyoutaKira the dev ?
If yes. i hope this summons him :)

    MD5_0 ... MD5_7 are currently unused parameters.
They are used in only early prototype version.
I want to remove them but AUx crashes when I remove them.

And you cannot control KQ MiniSynth via AUx parameters.
I tried to add all parameters but Host (GarageBand) crashed.

Use "Custom Controller" and MIDI Control Change instead.

How exactly do i get custom controller to react to midi input ?

  • Each cable sends a value mostly -1.0 ... 1.0 in internal implementation.

    0 in CC then 0,
    -8192 in CC then -1.0,
    8191 in CC then 1.0.

p.s. English-Japanese translation may be wrong. I'm sorry if I guessed wrong.

oh i understood this. what i meant is. lets say Audiounit in AUM. how do i get it to accept cc ?
i tried custom control ctrl No 14 sending to VCF Frequency. internal works. external does not.

  • edited June 2017

Connect a cable between custom control's out and VCF's V/Oct or CV.

i did that. its working internally. how to get modstep cc => kq-minisynth custom control.
