In choosing between 10.5 and 12.9, one should remember that iOS11 will improve quite a bit for split view and slide over multitasking. The 12.9 would probably be best for operating two apps simultaneously.

Full size iPads work fine in the bathroom too. I should know, because I use my 9.7" in there all of the time.
I still don't understand reasoning behind placing stereo speakers on each side of the charging port! Surely no one watches movies or browses the internet in portrait and when panoramic both channels remain on one side making the whole stereo pointless. I would have thought Apple to be a bit better than this.
Aren't there 4 speakers on this iPad, one in each corner? That's what I thought at least, I could be wrong.

According to this, the 12.9 will be able to have two apps in split screen when the ipad is held vertically, displaying both apps with regular landscape UI (in a 75/25 ratio). The 10.5 will display one app in regular mode and the other in compact (iPhone) mode.

They're not quite in the corners, but yes there are 2 speakers on each side in landscape mode.
I love the 12.9 size but maybe (unlike most people everywhere) it works for me because I don't have a laptop anymore? The 12.9 it's my PC.
If you have a PC already the 10.5 iPad seems like a better solution.
I think that it all comes down to personal preference and what other devices somebody might own and also be using.
I like my current iPad Air 2 and soon to be iPad Pro 10.5, but my wife likes her iPad Mini 4, she's on her second iPad Mini so far.
I like my tiny iPhone SE which fits in my front pocket, while my wife likes her huge iPhone 6S+.
It's like shoe sizes. You wouldn't expect everybody to walking around wearing the same size shoe.
The previous comment made it sound as though the sound was lopsided or something.
I haven't heard the sound coming from a 10.5 yet, but based on what I've read, it's supposed to be decent, for a tablet sized device at least, and compared to earlier iPads.
I’ll take bigger every time. If they made a 21” iPad, I’d probably buy it. Not so mobile, but I’d use it at home. Helps with my fairly poor eyesight. Big knobs and buttons are not so finicky and fiddly. Virtual keyboards are more playable with more keys and bigger. Multitasking is better and GUI designers can get more on the bigger screen. More pixels gets closer to seeing my big photos and videos as they really are. And I have a small penis.
Yeah. While not able to get either, yet, I enjoy researching. The big boy is just too unwieldy, and given that is has the same ram as the 10.5, the main advantage is for those who want to do a lot of IPad based art, or read comics.
The more I look, the more I think the 10.5 is the way to go. As for storage, 256gb is the most obvious price point, being x4 what I have on this iPad Air 2. But going to 512gb, obviously x8 storage is tempting.
In my case my air2 will still be my super portable iPad. I'm thinking of grabbing the 12.9 as my "power user" iPad. Plus in ios11 the 12.9 will be able to run 2 full size iPad apps running in landscape when used vertically. This basically means that with my air2 and the pro it will let me jam with the equivalent of 2 iPad minis and an iPad with link. My ica4+ letting me record all the audio in Aum running on the pro. Also. Any sketches I do while on the go can just be airdropped to the pro for final touches...

Stereo sound works from left and right on the iPad Pro in Landscape (panoramic) mode too because there are speakers on each side of the iPad Pro (at least on my iPad Pro 9.7). It depends what way the iPad is held. If it is held in portrait mode then the Stereo sound changes to left and right in portrait mode and if it's in landscape mode changes to left and right in landscape mode.
I now came from the apple store and......bought......nothing lol.
I just know now that the 12.9" is way too bulky and heavy for a tablet if it´s not mainly for the table.
The 10.5" seems great so far and especially the 120Hz refresh looks really so good. But after the first shiny blinky bling bling i gone to the macbook pro with touch bar and tested Garage Band about 15 minutes.
I´ve done the same with the iPads and now i think iPad apps are still not what i want/need to create a whole track.
I might still order a 10.5" to test it and can send it back if i really can´t get warm with the workflow.
I was surprised how good i liked the touch bar when i could access automation parameters on it, playing midi note via the (really good for me) keyboard and a huge trackpad with force touch. And it looks sexy as hell for me too.
The apps on the 12.9 (of course i couldn´t test all the music apps) looks a bit lost and so many space is wasted.
The 10.5" looks for me like the best tablet i had in my hand yet. But not sure still.
I loved my iPad Air too at the beginning but then it was getting boring and a workflow killer and i sold it after a year.
Mmmmhhhh, i have to make another experiment how it goes. Like said, macbook pro´s sadly out of my price at the moment.
The bad thing if i want an iPad 10.5" delivered next Monday i have to take the gold or rose gold. I prefer the space grey because of the black bezels mainly. But WTF..... i take the rose gold. Men´s can wear it in 2017!
Can you send us proof of this? I would be so happy if they finally let split screen viewing work this way.
Currently when you hold the iPad vertically, the only split screen option is two tall skinny apps. It's almost useless for music apps

Isn't the split vertical? That would make the apps portrait mode, not landscape.
Hm, you may be right, upon careful reading. That would explain the 75/25. Bummer.
If all music apps were better at supporting portrait mode (like AUM), then we could have had two portrait apps in full size with a 50/50 split when held horizontally. But users have been pestering devs to do landscape mode for so long in order to fit into docking solutions!
yes, I think split screen multitasking with music apps will be the exception rather than the rule. But on the other hand, auv3 is a kind of split screen, and it is horizontal
@Peter321 @Max23 I'm looking forward to the 4 speaker layout too but the Air 2 and onward already have stereo speakers. In portrait mode of course it's not very effective but with the new speakers landscape mode will be great for doing work on the couch, in bed, etc. making getting headphones on or hooking up an interface to drive monitors just for songwriting or editing unnecessary. First gen 12" Pro users already had that convenience.
The teardowns prove both Pro's have not only 4GB RAM but also that the RAM is the blistering DDR4 variety. So cool...
Congrats to the new owners, as hard as it is I'm waiting till Winter/Christmas for a 10" Pro, aside from dwindling storage space my Air 2 is running quite well, as fast or faster than the day I got it.
@MusicInclusive and other members have helped me brave the updates from iOS 8.2 outta the box to 10.3.5 as it sits now. But I really have to mull over taking the Air 2 to 11, I almost feel like I've pressed my luck enough. We'll see...

I was actually at the Apple Store initially to check out the new MBPs, as that was next on my buy list. Wasn't even really considering the 10.5 iPad seriously until I tried one.
But yes, the new touchbar is actually a lot nicer and more useable than I expected it to be.
You should wait to get the color you want with the iPad though, it's only a few more days most likely and you'll have it years right? The black bezel is what makes the iPad so darn sexy IMO.

Long answer, an app in iOS 10 will only work in split view if it is enabled to do so (including a required split view vertical orientation layout, which is slightly narrower than standard portrait orientation). If the app isnt optimized for it, it simply won't come up in 50:50 split.
Not sure....while i always use an iPhone (also for music) i never liked the iPad really. When i bought my macbook, Logic and a lot plug-ins i finally could create sounds i always wanted in a lot faster workflow.
A buttersmooth scrolling might won't change that.
But the macbook i want would cost me 3299€.
But it might be a better investment in my case due to all the plug-ins i collected.
Like i said, iOS apps sadly still far away for me compared to my favorite plug-ins.
I do still hope coming apps will use the mobile power it offers. Maybe i should wait until my most awaited iOS app comes out....NanoStudio 2.

I like when I can read what's on screen...
I played again with it and the screen is really so great. I also tryed the pencil the first time and wasn´t really impressed. Nowhere near to pen and pencil really.
They also had Launchpad and GarageBand to test on it. The GUI´s really look so great on it and so but yeah, i just couldn´t let the 1049€ go because i can buy so much things for it which are better for my music production at this moment.
I really have to wait until the apps come out which really makes use of it and worth to buy an iPad for it since music creation would be 90% of the things i would do with it mainly.
The only 2 DAW´s i ever liked and used for many tracks on an iOS device are NanoStudio and BeatMaker 2.
I tryed Auria, FL-Stdudio, Cubasis, Music Studio and some others but they all had something i won´t work with.
So i must wait for NanoStudio 2 and BeatMaker 3 if they are worth it for me to go more into iOS music production again. And i can test these also before on my iPhone. So that shiny new iPad Pro 10.5" makes no sense yet for me.
The bad thing is that this freaking screen looks so good that you won´t go back.....even my macbook pro retina looks bad against it. But yeah, the apps are not there for me and audio tools are the things i focus on.
I really want an iPad Pro....but i want pro apps and i don´t have a good feeling this might change so far.
Then iOS 11 is also some time away and then i could take another year before apps really use all the new stuff....in the meantime the iPad Pro whatever next version is there with A11X chip and 8GB RAM.
My macbook also needs a replacement (too slow to handle my projects).

I received my iPad 10.5 Pro in the mail today and after about 1.5 hours of transferring my old set up to the new one, I'm all up and running.
I've been using it for a short time, and my first impressions are that it's great, which was to be expected. Everything looks nice, the display is great etc.
I'll be getting the pencil tomorrow.
The only minor thing that I didn't like so far is the speaker placement.
When using the iPad in landscape, like when watching a movie, video or playing certain games, the speakers on the left and right side are not identical.
One side has the speakers farther spaced apart than the other side, and this obviously has an effect on the overall stereo image.
The two sides (L & R) should be identical. There might be some technical or hardware limitation or compromise for this speaker placement choice, but I sure wish that they were identical.
Because the sound field is not equally balanced now. There is a difference between the L and R side balance because of the different speaker spacing.
Of course, the current iPad speakers are much better than they were before on my iPad Air 2, because there you only got one side, when using the iPad in landscape mode.
But even though it's better and improved, it's still not optimal and can yet get better.
To each his own. If I could - I would happily purchase an iPad with no speakers (and no camera!). I don't think I've listened to the internal speakers on my iPad for more than an hour total. 99.5% of the time it's headphones. And I've never used the camera on my iPad once in 5+ years ...
