Wedding DJs using iPads I need your help

My wife and I have branched out from just playing acoustic guitar and violin traditional wedding music to also DJing and planing all in one... We have a wedding coming up soon and I was looking into playing music from my iPad with Spotify. I was wondering what would be the best DJ apps for this purpose that will also pay off for music production in my other endeavors? I am looking at the Djay 2 app for $5 or the full version for $20 or Traktor for $10… These are the obvious ones that pop up on an app search and that I have also heard their names on this forum and others, but I'm looking for opinions because Audiobus is the absolute best forum I've ever encountered...just sayin...
I'm looking for something specifically that can link with Spotify, will be easy for weddings and also pay off in the long run for my electronic music making... any advice or recommendations is appreciated thanks guys…

  • I don't know much about DJ apps but feel compelled to share my two cents anyway. If you're making money doing weddings and ensuring that spotify integration and the rest of the main features you need 'just work' for Jan and John's special day, find the absolute best app for that purpose alone and ignore any other side benefits. I can see why other features might be cool and desirable (I shop this way myself as a hobbyist) but reckon it's mostly just noise when not messing up the father/daughter dance (and getting referrals for more work) is really the point.

  • My opinion is go for djay it works great with Spotify if u can afford the extra money get djay pro.

Absolutely agree 100%... I have a hotspot stick and also have the super important songs saved on 2 iPads, an iPod, phone and computer if I need it. (want only iOS hence my post here...) I appreciate your awareness bro...being that my wife and I have played acoustic music for weddings before and witnessed and watched DJs and planners, we definitely understand the importance of the day for the couple! I have always trusted this forum for good advice so just trying to find out what everybody uses....I just added the fact that I produce as a reason to persuade myself to buy the most expensive app to fuel my serious iOS music appdiction...lol...you know what I'm talking about!

  • DJay Pro is the best

  • There is a $5 version and a $20 version...convince to pay money...lol...

  • Get the version that integrates with Spotify. You can even download your set I think. That way you don't have to depend on streaming and the venue's wi-fi.

  • Integrates perfectly with djay pro

  • How much does a DJ make when DJing a wedding? 50 cents?

No offense to the OP, but I wouldn't want them DJing my wedding, since they're in doubt about even spending $20 for an app.

Where does the OP suggest any doubt about spending $20?

  • The post where they write convince me to spend $20.

No offensive taken bro... But if you read my posts I said I was very aware of whats expected at a wedding. Also I mentioned my iOS APPdiction and wanting to be convinced to spend money. I just like to hear it from like minded folks. LOL! I have no problem buying apps I just have a problem buying apps. And I just bought Djay pro for 20 refried beans! I already figured I would, but again...I was just looking for help from my favorite forum...Geezsh...keep fingering your pads and have a lot of fun doing it!

Djay 2 works with Spotify so it's the entry level (was the pro until the pro arrive so...) and let you mix A>B songs and supports dedicated controllers. If you need video too then go for djay pro directly and start big (and updated).
I also recommend you buy a dedicated controller (avoid idj pro please, it's 30 pins and it was useful where cck3 and charging wasn't available but oudated atm)... like Pioneer or Philips m1x if you are planning doing some pool parties too. Your image as dj is also important (shame but true) and people (djs mostly) look at iPad djing as toys so try to "wear the best suit you can"

    • Weego for the cheap
    • Numark mixdeck quad for the compatibility and request (yes there is still people bringing cds to weddings)
    • Philips m1x for the cool (with extra soundsystem of course) for Ibiza look (those white-dress parties)
If you consider expent less, just mix with the iPad directly. We are at these point where if you aren't bring turntables or cdj (or numark quad) it doesn't care what you bring (but you will need a good music selection and almost basic mixing skills)

Also consider find a dj collaborator with all the gear/sound equipment and experience to upgrade your acoustic setup with an electro-acoustic option (giving you 3 possible slots and openning even more the Ibiza-like door). Instead of carrying with more work, adding extra help will be better and it will come the day you will have 2 weddings at the same time and money will no be a problem (since it's more difficult to find acoustic musicians open to work with djs than the oppossite)

Few examples with some good parts IMO.

Obviously all of that in combination with more classical selection for the acoustic set. Choose the slot you offer (target) is the most important decission IMHO.

Give me your opinion to understand better your needs and give you the best help as I can.

As I understand it, the question being asked is which app suits his needs the best, i.e. what makes DJay Pro worth the extra $15, taking into account what the app will be used for. He doesn't say he's not willing to pay; the fact the $20 version was on his list suggests he was from the beginning.

  • @Dubbylabby thanks for the input. My wife and I are looking to basically... Be the planners and organize the events and/or work with a planner. At the ceremony play guitar/violin traditional stuff. At the closing we could could stay and play cocktail hour if the ceremony takes place in the same room as everything else, if not we would already have another PA setup at the reception area. We are trying to offer the ceremony music and DJ in one, no bands or other live music. Of course if they want that they'll hire one or we have bands to recommend. From there is where the DJ equipment comes in. I think you're spot on about having a controller for the pro look. I am definitely going to look into getting one. Any suggestions? It can be both iOS and computer compatible...

For djay app those I recommended are compatible with both versions (iOS and macOS) so if you are going to take request in cd/pendrive the Quad is the most complete, if not weego (Pioneer is a great salespoint from image poco) and the Philips only if you need the cool factor party-like (these are cheaper at second hand).

All of them has the basic features to make a session so it's up to you (and your target).

Anyways at djay page you can find all the compatible models to check if any other suits you better.

    Did lol

  • I wish Djay let you use any controller you wanted but regardless it's an awesome app and the touchscreen is good for controlling it.

...and, the security for being awesome: it's a Swedish app!

  • @ErrkaPetti good to know it!
How it woks with external controllers? AB and so..?

  • Djay works great with spotify provided you have a good wifi connection. I don't think it lets you download music yet, even if you download it on spotify. If that changed then that's very good.
