Underrated machine. Sadly Roland abandoned their sampler line...
It was huge ! True workstation , fast workflow, great FX , very detailed editing.
You mean fortunately Roland abandoned the sampler line . Every new sampler they launched had new features, but for unknown reasons they cut cool features from the previous generation. I am talking specifically for
Sp-505 -> sp-606->sp-555
mc909->mc808
The grandaddy of all Grooveboxes. I'll never sell mine because it was one of the inspirations for HammerHead which started my music software adventures! And I loved it to bits because it finally allowed me to make electronic music in a package I could afford as a poor student![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Maybe Roland has Alzheimer...
Jokes aside, it seems variphrase wasn't the big deal for them than for us... so aside vsynth, all the products with it gomfrom standalone to computer based (vp9000-VariOS).
Aira seems like revamped variOS (plug out) and cloud the logical step in their proposal.
Shame if you ask me. I prefer the Korg approach by far and with ReSlice, BH2 and BM3 variphrase is only a "memory" instead a real necessity nowadays.
I expected a new groovebox (the rumoured aira) but they bring dj808 and was Pioneer with the ToRaiz who nailed the idea.
Variphrase...golden years (had an SP-606/VP9000 super combo). Nostalgia end ....
Another groove box ..In matching orange..
It brings to mind an idea for a song! ". Mamas got a groovebox she where's in her dress,
When daddy is home they never get no rest,
They're playing all night and the musics all right
Mamas got a groovebox and Daddy never sleeps at
Night. "
Not sure how or why but it just came to me somehow. , no one steal my idea, okay?

Pete Townshend may be old, but he ain't senile.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Aww man, Hammerhead!!...The software that taught me how to draw out a beat and how to use a groovebox before I had a groovebox. Windows 95-era style...And of course Tuareg too. Thanks for making software Brambos! Its awesome to see how far we've come!
My MC-303 has the 'buggy' firmware that makes the 808 'woodblock' has random pitch variation between trigs
That was fixed with a firmware update that required some chips to be changed but those were never available here in Sweden... (Roland Scandinavia didn't even know there was a fix for it back then, DOH!).
When the mc 909 production ended they launched the 808 . IMO it was supposed to be the successor and better than the previous model . On first firmware editions the 808 did not even had chop function.
In the sp606 they dropped the pitch mode and manual chop ,the 505 had . At least ,among other features it had dual FX engine .
On the sp-555 Roland forgot about the dual FX engine .
I am 100% sure that if Roland launches an sp sampler now , it will be way overpriced, will not have the looper, or the instant FX swapping the 555 has.
If they target on the MC class then no more monitoring faders...
Can't comment about the legendary MV series as I (unfortunately) never had one .
I'll always remember the SP808 as my longest struggle with a piece of hardware.
Got it cheapo in the bay for it's FX unit that had a SpaceEcho emulation spot on to their RE20 pedal (imh ears), so why not buy a full groovebox for less ?
Bad idea - as I wanted it to work without the buzzing Zip-Drive (once state of the art
).
Should be easy, looked like an IDE standard connector, was ATA in fact, an invisible, but crucial difference... leading to half a dozen compact-flash readers and an even larger collection of outdated memory cards - all failed, but eventually the thing came into operation with (adapted) memory cards used for Cisco routers.
Fine - copied a bunch a bunch of samples from the first iMPC data set to the flash card, played and put it on the shelf for a couple of months.
Another bad idea, as those cards seemed to loose their content unpowered.
I surrendered and sold the thing ...
Ok, a lot of blabla, but there was something to learn about Roland:
the SP808 has a bro called A9 by Edirol (supposed for video sound editing), exactly the same hardware.
With the A9 firmware IDE drives and regular CF-cards worked flawless, just the knobs had wrong labels (of course) and the FX set lacked the beloved SpaceEcho.
It would have been a snap for Roland to exchange the drive software (with a hack of the midi firmware file one could flash either machine), but they never did.
The SP808 had a nice touch, but (for me) was terrible to operate by it's shift-function control and a rather deep menue.
Quite strange, as the basic idea of a track recorder + groove sequencer was really cool.
I also liked the fx-sound for it's special character. Roland used that chipset in countless devices, certainly smart from a business point of view.
MC505 was the piece of gear responsible for making me the man I am today. Love performance beast. I still have dreams about finding one unopened in a box for sale today![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Glad Novation picked up the baton to continue in the tradition. This was my first piece of gear and I am sure it won't be my last
Interesting topic...
Sp808 could be updated to A6 and work with hard disk. Not a easy or fast upgrade process but there is documentation on the net about succefully users.
About features and series... it's unclear why Roland labeled these so bad but surely different teams working on different units. The variphrase was underrated technology but also bad marketed and overpriced. Kontakt and Acid killed it, Ableton put the last nail in the coffin. iOS samplers are coming and covering the groovebox possibilities but users still need a compact solution for remote control (beststep pro, Akai new mpds, push2...) and plugnplay (the best of novation proposal)
About loopers they released the rc505 which is a cool idea but later to the party (loopyHD with a dock and midi controller has more features and less bugs) but even so they sold a lot. GTL even further...
So yeah, it's nostalgia for crap workflow. It's called rheumatic mpcemia![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/trollface.png)
I had an SP808, great fun but, as others have noted, flawed in key areas.
I had forgotten about Zip drives, probably for the best ...
Totally off topic but I'd love the Korg Karma software on iOS
