Sidechain compression/limiting in Cubasis
I'm looking for an audio unit app that can give Sidechain compression/limiting in Cubasis.
This is mainly so that I can get the pumping bass drum that makes other instruments duck out.
Can this be done another way in Cubasis? (I only want to do this in Cubasis - my DAW of choice).
Comments
It looks like AUFX:Push does the trick.
However, it looks like you can only get one instance of Push to do the sidechaining, so best to use it on pads or some other sustained sound.
Thanks @jwmmakerofmusic
I came across this in my search, but I don't think it's exactly what I'm looking for. I think I need something that affects more than one track at a time.
My only other idea for this is doing the ducking manually, but that's a lot of beats over an entire song!
Then I think what you're looking for would be something like this....
http://www.cableguys.com/volumeshaper.html
...or this...
http://www.kickstart-plugin.com
...where the ducking is instant and no external sidechain input source is needed.
I've asked before about an autoducking AU, and nobody seems interested to develop one. The only app with an "autoducking" effect is FL Studio Mobile 3, but it's a built-in effect, not an AU.
Yeah, other than "autoducking" or AUFX:Push, I have no idea how to get sidechain into Cubasis since Cubasis has no internal sidechain compression mechanisms as of right now.
@jwmmakerofmusic Thanks again, I'll take a look at those two. It's almost as if you need to put an effect onto the tracks/sounds you want to duck?
Think I need to go to my lab/back bedroom to experiment
@j_liljedahl Is Aufx:push about to become an AU?
I'll do you a deal and purchase the entire AUFX range if push becomes an AU soon
Also Kuvert from klevgrand can do the trick
@mschenkel.it Ooh, Korvpressor! Just looked and it's AU! Anyone used it/recommend it?
Korvpressor is an incredible AU Compressor, but alas, no sidechaining. Kuvert is what @mschenkel.it was recommending, but it's only IAA at the moment unfortunately.
Korvpressor can't do sidechain afaik
And that is sadly one of the remaining apps from KLVGR that has yet to receive an AUv3 treatment...
So I decided to write them. Klevgrand is a good company whom I have no doubt will be willing to help (whether it's far off in the schedule or towards the front).
So apart from the sidechaining, could I just apply korvpressor as an AU onto the tracks that I'd like to duck?
Yup but without sidechain there won't be any ducking.
Btw ddmf nyc compressor can sidechain but I think on iOS it can sidechain only the filter
Thanks all for suggestions, it seems I may have to wait for a true sidechain for ducking to be triggered from another track
So with Kuvert @mschenkel.it , would I apply it to the whole track to achieve the ducking?
I really like Cubasis, but this is one thing I would try in Auria.
Yup. Otherwise you could use push/nycompressor filter side chain at somewhat final stage on the master given that the kick's frequency area is well defined and crystal clear from anything else. At this stage you could eventually use push with a cloned ghost kick track side chaining the whole mix.
Even with Auria, you’ll need a FabFilter plug-in to do it. I do it all the time for ducking and de-essing using Pro C2 and Pro MB, and for cleaning live drums leak with Pro G.
@mschenkel.it Thanks buddy
There is a fairly ugly workaround using mixdowns of the separate elements required loaded into something like Loopy and using parallel Audiobus chains with AUFX Push, then rerecording and reimporting the result back into Cubasis.
I didn't realise that Cubasis doesn't seem to have group channels or mix busses till I saw this. That's a shame.
I've just started a new thread to see if AUM running in parallel with Cubasis is a workable solution.
I really don't want to go down the Auria route because of the UI and expensive add ons.
Sad to say, that's the reason I went down the Auria Pro route. I'd rather use Cubasis, but at the end of the day, Auria does what I need it to do and very well too.
Although come to think of it, I like Beatmaker 3 a whole lot more (been Beta testing it), and that DOES have internal sidechaining. Now, Auria sits still until I have something I need mastered (given FabFilter's plugins are the most professional solution for audio mastering on the iPad).
@LFS and the Cubasis team should by now be well aware of that side-chan compression is something Cubasis uses are asking for. I trust that in due time we'll get it together with all the other requested features such as tempo-track, triplet-grid, better file-management and higher sequencer resolution among other things.
I'm liking the over all feel of Cubasis and It keeps me coming back all the time when I'm not busy digging my teeth into the BM3 beta
@Samu Yeah, I've been on the Cubasis forum too and I believe it is on the list of to dos somewhere.
Cubasis is the place I've become comfortable building tracks in, so I just need those few bits of fine tuning without having to fork out and learn a whole new app or ten.
Did anyone solve this. I am using Cubasis 2, recording my bass in through an audio track and mixing it with a Kick Drum I made in KQDixie on another track. I am not looking for a pronounced pumping effect. I just want the subtle ducking if my bass audio channel triggered by my midi drum channel so that the kick drum punches through without the two tracks getting muddy.
I watched the video on the Waves plugins but didn't seem to mention anything:
