Gadget is cooking my ipad

Anyone else noticed this in the last couple of months as well?It drains my battery like crazy now and I have the feeling it started when they introduced insert FX.Yes,i know what you think and you are right,i'm using them quite a lot but so do i in cubasis or Auria (i'm mostly bouncing all gadget tracks to either of them and arrange/mix there) and the quality of gadgets effects is way behind. And yes,you are also right, using realtime synths/sampler is another story than using audiofiles but i never had THIS trouble before and some added sub par fx shouldn't make THAT much of a difference battery wise. Also,i never go to the limit of what gadget can handle on an Air 2.I made once a test with phoenix synths all playing the same melody and i could go up to 25 before i got some crackling.Usually i use way less gadgets and most of them are just the sample player bilbao and Abu Dhabi.Maybe i should get used to freeze more often now...

  • I'm on an Air 1, use gadget a lot, when i started using mucho insert effects i had some crackling issues, and yep, freezing some tracks solved all the problems.

  • personally, i've never noticed any issues with cpu use or heat from using Gadget. I'm on ipad4, and usually push it... often running 12-15 Gadgets with 2-3 insert effects on most and a little automation on a few tracks. Maybe because my ipad is still 32-bit has something to do with it? Does running stuff 64-bit use that much more power? I've seen others mention battery drainage and heat issues on newer model ipads..

  • This really became a problem in the 3.0 update for me

My air 1 would get extremely hot and the battery drain was through the roof. I've since upgraded to a new ipad but Gadget remains sidelined until they stop adding new gadgets and start making their code more efficient

At the time i did a comparison between Gadget and Caustic 3 using the same midi file and approximating the synths as best i could and while Gadget used around 60% cpu, Caustic never broke 18%

  • I have had the same problem on my iPhone and iPad since the last couple updates. I stopped using Gadget until it gets fixed. I found it didn't matter if I had only one instrument with no effects, it still takes way too much battery for my liking. It didn't do that before the updates.

  • Yeah mine heats up, probably hammers the battery too.

  • Yeah, my Pro 9.7 and iPhone SE get really hot when just playing on 1 gadget (without insert fx). It goes through the battery twice as fast as similar apps.
Doesn't make sense, when I play on standalone ODYSSEi/iWavestation/iM1 this doesn't happen.

    Also see this thread.

I advise anyone bothered by this to report directly to Korg through their contact form.
I did back in April and they replied they would investigate the issue...

  • It's been draining battery for a while. Forget which update i first noticed it.

  • I just keep it plugged in so I am no longer aggravated at battery shit.

I'm with @RustiK on plugging in all the time. If using a MIDI controller I have the newer USB3 CCK with charging port so it's always getting power off that and if just messing around on the coach etc. using the iPad touch interface I put it on a charger.

Whether drawing off a charger or the battery I throw my report too: my Air 2 gets very warm, never so hot I get all freaked out but yeah...it gets warm.

Yep. All the apps like Gadget and Beathawk and etc., brag about who is the toughest, baddest of the bad apps while Caustic quietly stirs the campfire with its dick.

I did this and just got this reply

  • @jn2002dk Thanks for reporting it!
I got a similar answer from KORG, but I replied the problems occurs with just playing 1 simple gadget. No heavy Lexington, audio recording or whatever.
Just jamming on, let say, Kiev or another base gadget heats up my iPad and iPhone.

But when I play ODYSSEi standalone there's no such problem. So it's really Gadget's 'environment' that's using max CPU all the time. I hope they find a way to balance it...
