ios audio out vs interface audio out
Is there a big difference? I have an irig HD so my audio out is the headphone jack. Anyone taking the audio out through usb interface? Sound better?
Comments
It sounds better via USB, and dramatically better with a pro interface like Apogee’s One, Duet or Quartet.
Agreed. It's a huge difference here between the headphone out and using and interface. If all I had was the headphone out option I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if I have access to an audio interface I'll always choose one. Especially for recording anything.
The difference will depend on the iOS device/interface combination. With my iPad Air 2 and Steinberg UR22ii I can hardly tell the difference between the headphone out or the interface.
If you avoid high impedance cans, the headphone out of an Air-2 or comparable iDevice performs really well.
I just switched between my preferred Audient ID22, the iCA4+ and the headphone out.
(no idea about devices without phones plug)
Cans were classic AKG K501, which aren't as easy to drive as 701 and newer.
The difference isn't night and day, but the ID22 gives a better impression of the mix and the sound is less fatiguing.
Id say it depends on the DA converters the interface has, I'm using an Apogee Duet for Mac/IOS and the difference is HUGE, where as before I bought the Duet I was using an Avid Fast Track Duo, and Id say it did sound better but nowhere near what I hear from the Duet. The Moog Model 15 sounds incredible thru it.
