IAA or AU?

Question from basic iOS user:
Which connection between apps is better and more stable - IAA or AU?

Comments

  • Depends on the app. AU is definitely more stable -- essentially, an AU app runs just like a built-in instrument whereas an IAA app runs on its own and only sends audio back. The downside of AU is that, as of right now, the interface is small and you need to use the host's controller (e.g. the GarageBand keyboard or a MIDIFlow controller). IAA lets you use full screen apps with whatever controller the developer dreamed up.

Olympia Noise Co and Moog have really solid IAA implementation on most of their apps so you get to take full advantage of their unique controller setups via IAA. They don't offer AUs and even if they did, I would still use IAA because their controllers are so good. But it sounds like iOS 11 has new AU features so it will hopefully offer the best of both worlds.

  • I find AU distinctly superior on iPad, but still prefer IAA on phone for interface reasons.

  • I try to stay away from iaa nowadays with aus available. Iaa is yesterdays technology!

Not sure that's quite right IAA instruments (as opposed to generators) also run just like a built in instrument, but, they are limited to one instance and can often linger invisibly in the background.

You definitely have a good point but I would disagree for two reasons:

    1) AUs maintain the entire host's control panel whereas IAA only gives play, pause, and record controls. And most apps don't even offer that -- I can only think of a handful that have an IAA control panel, and most apps require you to manually sync timing to the IAA host. Audiobus handles a lot of this automatically but using IAA directly through the DAW reveals a lot of little gaps.

    2) IAA sends audio back to the host so if you want to change the sound, you need to re-record the part. AU integrates directly with the host's piano roll so if you want to change the sound, you just open up the instance and change your settings. Apparently IAA instruments DO allow you to sequence through the host, which would be handy for experimenting, but you still need to record an audio file prior to export.

Edit: and all of this is written under the assumption that Animoog, Model 15, Patterning, and Ribbons are IAA instruments. If they are generators, please accept my apologies

Animoog. And Patterning are generators for sure don't know about the others.

But for example if I use MusicStudio and select for example Cassini as an instrument then when I play the keyboard or midi in MS I hear Cassini sounds.

If I save the project it saves the fact that Cassini was the instrument on that track, and reloads it when I next start the project.

Model 15 appears to have both.

Mind you AU is still the future in my view!

  • AUs over IAA any day of the week. Okay, so if a generator is IAA-only (Thor, Sampletank, etc), I tend to link things up via Audiobus. Easier to switch apps through the side panel in my honest opinion. That said, if the app is an IAA effect, I don't bother purchasing it. AU effects will always take precedence.
