Using iPhone on stage

Hi, my first post here :-)

I have read about quite a few people who use their iPads on stage. For the people who use iPhone on stage (do they exist?), I am wondering how you have set up you rig. In particular:
-Do you use an external audio interface or something like PlugKey? I think the headphone out is generally fine-sounding but was wondering how the connection holds up during live use.
-Where do you place your iPhone relative to the keyboard? I am thinking of getting a car dashboard holder for my phone, but can't seem to get a simple one that would easily connect to my midi keyboard.

Thanks

Video or Audio of your music?

  • First of all i think its a bit rude to be on your phone while on stage.. :D

Its better to use an audio interface(through lighning port) than headphone out. Headphone out isnt bad, but you can get a better sound with quality interface, especially the low end will be deeper sounding. Or well the cheapest most portable interfaces made for ios are most likely not any better than the headphone out. But you can hook any class compliant audio interface to iphone using the usb dobgle(or cck as it was formely called). But the interface needs its own power source or an powered usb hub.

Just put the phone where you want it. Maybe getting some cheap and easy to remove phone case that you could tape with double sided tape or glue on the keyboard or on the interface if you have it on top of keys?

Also one thing about interfaces. Having midi ports on it makes life much cheapr if you arent using usb midi!

I've used it live a bunch of times. Number one tip, may seem obvious but: set it to aeroplane mode and turn of all notifications!

It's possible to turn wifi back on while using aeroplane mode if you need Link.

I also use a stand (in my case, a gorilla pod type thing with a cheap iPhone tripod mount) so that it's raised from the table and angled conveniently.

This what I have and use for videos anyway.

For me a pain that iPHONE 7 wont fit with case on it so I need to take cover off which is a pain 2 layers ......

I am using the headphone jack on my iPad with no issue. Just make sure you get a quality cable

When I was using my iPhone for OnSong, I had a mic stand mount for it. Same with my iPad. If you dont use a mic stand, i might recommend one of the suction cup ones if your synth has enough flat space to "stick" it to.

This looks like a "small footprint" one and appears well-reviewed

    yes THIS!!! LOL.

Also obvious, make sure its fully charged before a show and keep a charger handy. I don't like the optics of it being plugged in during sets but you could certainly charge between sets.

This is really really important. I have done many experiments to see if it's possible to detect audio difference between headphone jack and the lightning port to audio interface--and I haven't heard much difference in a live situation (PA speakers, etc). BUT, I have a bunch of connectors to the headphone jack that started crackling over time. Don't want this to happen in the middle of a gig.

  • I use an audiobox itwo by prosonus thru the lightning port of the iPhone (no camera kit necessary). My keyboard has a space on it so I just put some grippy rubber and set the phone on that.

I run my guitar, mic and keyboard into the prosonus and run tonestack, synths and aufx:space (mic reverb) thru audiobus into loopy. Works great for one man band stuff

  • I think the headphone out of the iPhone is just fine for a live environment. There's so many competing frequencies - venue ambience/crowd noise, amp & monitor hum and buzzing. I doubt any human could really notice the audio quality difference between the headphone jack and lightning port of your phone. Just make sure it's loud enough.

Velcro tape is a decent option for attaching your phone to any spot that's convenient on stage, like your controller or mic stands or music stands or makeshift barstool stands. I keep a spare phone case and a roll of velcro tape in my gig bag.

Also, don't forget AIRPLANE MODE. I've made this mistake before, it's pretty jarring to have your song interrupted by a text tone or phone call. Plus, with out enabling Airplane mode, my phone can cause some weird noisy interference with some of my other gear.
