Cool Beatonal midi sequencing trick
In case you missed it, Beatonal is a new 3 dollar app that basically amounts to Figure with midi out (and much more). Like Figure, if you continue to play over a pattern as it loops back around, the new notes will blend with the old in a mono synth kind of way. But I have discovered a way to make this behavior more like ikaossilator style note replace.
Beatonal can have velocity mapped to the y axis of its keys and send that velocity info to any app that accepts velocity and midi notes. So you set it that way and as you record your patterns in Beatonal, simply keep one key held down at zero velocity and play everything else on top. Now when you play over a preexistig pattern, the sound will snap back to the silent, zero velocity key you are holding when not playing any audible notes which basically sounds like 100% ikaossilator style note replace. You can now enjoy this liberating style of sequencing with any midi instrument app that accepts velocity values of zero. I tried it with Gadget, works like a charm.
Special notes:
Beatonal must be set to free play and monophonic. If you choose a rhythm pattern, the point is moot.
Also, though Beatonal sends zero velocity midi data, its internal sound engine does not accept zero velocity. So if you do this with the internal sounds, you will still hear the held notes at a very low volume, though it still sounds pretty good.
I hope this helps fans of ikaossilator like myself who always wished it had midi out. This is the best workaround yet.

Slick
Good find and thanks for sharing
Need vid plz. Me dumb.
Sorry I don't have video equipment. I can answer questions though!
It'll be nice when iOS11allows easy screen recording. I guess I don't see the difference between your 0 vel. trick and just playing freestyle into Gadget timeline. Gave up on iKaossilator long ago so memory has faded.
It might not be for you then. And that's ok. But basically it lets you jam endlessly over a loop of predetermined length in Beatonal (4bars) until the perfect take is captured and/or replace notes of the melody live until it's just right. As opposed to spamming the undo button in Gadget (and losing any parts you liked) or stopping the music to edit/delete notes, etc. You just keep jamming. And then recording the midi into Gadget is easy with Link enabled.
Ah. The elusive auto-kill take. Now I've got ya. Thx.
Rediscovering this GEM...
It's a beauty...
thanks cap
Thanks @db909 - I picked up beattonal because if your previous posts about it and it great. Love it for live midi out jamming into Animoog or whatever.
However, I didn’t think it did send velocity as midi-out on the y-axis of the keys. Certainly Animoog didn’t seem to be getting any velocity out of it. Do you have to set up a particular configuration to achieve this?
Well make sure you have “send velocity” on in the midi settings. Also I would check the y axis knob on the instrument settings to set it to “level”.
Ah... thanks! I think I previously missed that button!
So that’s great. That means I could use midiflow to convert velocity into any midi cc. Or in synths like Animoog and Montpelier (in Gadget) you can assign velocity to various parameters other than simply note volume.
As long as you post the results here
We do need ‘parts’ in this monster, live jamming thru Studiomux is sweet too..
Hope to see an update..
