SPACE-SAVING trick using AUDIOSHARE...

If...like me, Audioshare is your go-to in the output slot and if...like me, your version of Audioshare stores a lot of your ideas, jams, noodling etc kept for a rainy day... then this might help.

If those files you have stored are in WAV format, then they'll be taking up a huge chunk of space...about 11MB per minute.
In the tools section top right, tap inside the Format box and you'll have a choice of 4 options. Choosing the last one, M4A AAC and tapping save will quickly reduce the file size by around 90%.

This is useful for those files being kept purely as musical sketches.

Hope it helps someone :)

Edit: Just to reiterate, this is useful for those files you've kept as ideas, and not those you plan to use as stems in an end project. See @j_liljedahl 's reply below. :)

  • That's a great tip. However, note that M4A is a lossy format, meaning that it will degrade sound quality (similar to mp3). So, don't do this for files you want to use in production!

PS. You can also pack an entire folder of WAVs into a ZIP file to save space, which will be lossless - exactly the same WAV files will appear when the ZIP is unpacked. To do this, long-press the folder and choose "Zip".

  • Good tip, although I don't think ZIP compression is very effective on WAV files so you're not likely to save much space. It's more for convenience bundling them together, I would say.

I used this method all the time and ti works great! In fact, I took the 800+ Mb Drum Loops HD app, pulled all of the loops out of it with iFunBox, batch converted them to MP3 files and separated them into proper folders, and then put them back into AudioShare and then deleted the Drum Loops HD app. I went from a 800+ Mb app to a folder in AudioShare that takes just under 100Mb. The sound quality was converted at 192kbps, and while I'm sure there is loss in quality, I can't hear the difference. That's a 700+Mb savings!!!

  • @j_liljedahl Could you add the lossless FLAC format to the convert options? That losslessly drops file sizes by half... :-)

  • @Audiojunkie: Looking into FLAC support is on my todo list :)

  • Nice! Thanks! :-)
