Dhalang MG Update (3.3)

The mac version was updated already last week and after some problems the iOS update is now also out.

Fixed:
- Touch play X control Pitch Bend made more sensible. Now similar to Y hold mode.
- Synth envelope modes loading fixed.
- Sampler voice stealing caused "snapping"/"popping" when repeating same note. Now fixed.
- Fixes also on Physical synth triggering.
- Manual improvements (new features, typos and stuff...)

  • Vector returner Feed mode now sets the phrase always to beginning (first note) when receiving Feed update. Makes now more sense to play the phrase starting from a different Feed -defined pitches.

New:
- Mono mode for sampler (all notes play on the same voice): Something requested; now it's much sensible to play monophonic instruments with sampler and to not leave previous notes fading by their envelopes.

  • Sample recording as a new sample or added segment: Also requested; now it's possible to record new samples/phrases with Dhalang. There is 6 second maximum recording time for now. It's listening the default audio input (microphone) but I guess if some external interface is connected it uses that input instead.

  • State machines improved : Route editing (move & delete route waypoints), route network connection on graph.

  • Particle sequencer improved: Surface-particle physique made more precise: now fast particles won't annoyingly get stuck inside surfaces and the collision mechanics are made more precise. This is due replacing naive collision mechanics with simple ray-tracing mechanics, that is unfortunately little heavier on the cpu.

Comments

  • @Hypertonal Just bought the mac version. I'll let you know how it goes after RFTM and some videos.

  • Can't wait to check out the update. Used Dhalang just the other night. Reminded how awesome it is. :)

Another update (3.4 on iOS, 3.2 on macOS):

Mostly stability/usability fixes and new stuff to sequence generators.

    New:

    • New vector sequencer y/pitch generation mode: Matrix. (vector uses probability matrix of the corresponding matrix sequencer)
    • UI: State machine countdown monitor. (current state countdown shown on all views)
    • Keyboard shortcuts (Desktop only) (makes switching synth/sequencer parts a lot faster)

    Fixed:

    • Online render buffer repeat bug fixed. (dropouts caused a buffer to repeat to the output file)
    • Rare project save crash/corruption bug fixed. (this should never happen now)
    • Matrix sequencer octave crossing mode improved significantly. (lots of work here, now it's a lot more sensible and musical)
    • Vector sequencer sync offset now included in it's x/time sum. (as sync offset makes the pattern longer..)
    • State machine sync and rewind improved.
    • UI improvements here and there.

I've spent lots of time testing/using the matrix sequencer while developing, and something weird ended up into audio:

Freak Out! Some kind of next (generative) space jam, I like.

  • Hey thanks for the great update @Hypertonal :)
I wonder if AB3 midi is in your plans? I've been using midi out from Dhalang with good results but would be great if you could add different DMG sequencers to different Audiobus 3 midi senders so you could then save this and add AB3 midi filters.

AB3 migration is something ahead. I'm now starting to work on porting Dhalang for Windows, for a future Steam release.

    Very very good track.
    Straight up my alley.
Where all the sounds here from your app (which I have but do not use at the moment)?

    Thanks!

    In this clip all sound are coming from Dhalang;

    • Drums are from a kit of high quality acoustic drum samples, in two samplers (one with bass drum, snare & toms, and one with cymbals & hat)
    • "bass" and "guitar" are physical synths, not far from the preset patches.
    • "piano" is additive synth, very simple sine harmonics with a slight FM-modulation.
    • "lead synth" is analog synth with detuned oscillators and heavy vibrato.

Mixed together with all 4 buses and finally mastered with iZotope Ozone mastering software.
