  • Horribly dated in my opinion. Its not even 64 bit compatible, so unless there’s an update in the works it will stop functioning on iOS 11

  • The rap on Tabletop has always been since it's trying to be this "all in one" environment getting anything in and out of it is a P.I.T.A. or impossible. I had it on my iPad for awhile, used it a few times and then erased it.

The idea on paper is cool but the execution is off. Plus Retronyms has the reputation of being, let's say a bit too corporate. The IAPs are expensive for what they are and development seems to have disappeared after release. I think a lot of us were shocked that iMPC Pro was updated since it'd been dormant for some time.

Tabletop isn't complete garbage just a disappointment from what it could of been. It may be worth getting if you get it on sale & don't have any high expectations.

Took me a while to get into it, but I ended up making some nice bits and pieces in Tabletop. HOWEVER I think it's worth getting if and ONLY IF they not only update it, but also fix the invariable instacrashes. I can't open projects at all at this point. Will they? No idea. Total silence. Fingers still crossed but breath not held.

Tabletop is actually 64 bit compatible, as of 6/7/17 and won't be obsolete with advent of iOS 11

Also it's free, so no need to wait for a sale to try it.

If you already own iMPC, iMPC Pro, iMini, iProphet, Phase84 you already have the best addons, and can have quite a bit of fun with those and the 14 basic devices included

I've used it to good effect to create loops and chunks to export via AudioCopy paste (not the app, it's not needed)

    @Shazamm

So since you've already got iMPC Pro and the original iMPC, and you've ever wanted to fool around with multiple iterations of one or the other...

YES BUT CRASHYDEADTHING for me anyways....OK, OK, will reinstall just in case....

EDIT: Should be said that a lot of the tunes I have that are crashing have Phase84 loaded in them and so it could be that rather than the whole bucket of pilchards. Or something else. Or me.

  • Confirmed 64-bit in the June 7th Update and I've always had a soft spot for Tabletop: I love the modular aspect of patching things together and though markedly more laborious as a Way Of Doing Things I found the archaicness to often be Result rewarding.

Definitely framed as a part-maker here rather than start-to-finish DAW but that's possibly my own creature of habit tendency for familiar DAW timeline arrangements as well as the fickleness of Tabletop: I'd not describe it as totally stable but it is capable of lightning in a bottle.

    Well put.

  • Tabletop is the greatest idea that always disappoints in the end. I reinstall regularly thinking I'll finally get along with it, and always uninstall even though I don't really need the free space any more.

  • I know I sound overly critical of retronyms. They seem like great folks and I love their moxy and crazy ideas (strike anyone?). But nothing they've created has ever been much fun for me. I'll probably keep buying but my expectations are low.

  • I agree with robertreynolds, it seem a like an awesome idea but every time I've gone to use it (not for a while now) I've been disappointed. Plus the closes of system created by Retronyms stops you from easily using it with other apps. Plus there is limited space so a small soon as you put a mixer, impc, pattern sequencer, synth and a few effects you've used up half your allocated space! And when you can't help but have this feeling that it's being neglected. There are better apps (gadget, cubasis, beatmaker 3) to use as a central hub for tunes

  • I know it got a lot of hate, but I really liked it. Some of the basic synths aren't that good, but with iMIni and IMPC you have some potential. I still like their implementation of the x-y filters better than most other apps.
The stability was much improved, but you do stll get crashes so a bit risky live, but multiple IMPC you have some serous power.

  • I use my tabletop all the time. Good place to eat food on. Use my iPad on it too. Pretty useful. Much better than eating on a sofa.

  • Fisrt app I downloaded and was great experience! Some random crashes ( especially on early versions ) , but especially the bundle price kept me off

  • It's fun and in its day got a lot of excitement. Is it capable of serious production? Hardly, but it can give novices a better understanding of music production concepts. If I was able to upgrade to a larger ipad (like a 128 gb or sth) I'd give it another spin. But if I had to choose one over the other, I'd skip Retronyms apps because of their limitations and go with Intua or Korg.

  • I tried it a while a go and did not get along with it. It seems outdated, somehow clumsy and too limited environment for me, but maybe you like it. Its free to give it a go. But audiobus and iaa(and the fact that you can load aus to daws) basically takes the need out of such environment imo

  • suggestions: using multiple iMPCs (rather than Pro's)
For whatever reason, (I like the kits), (also as a hedge against crashes given the lighter draw on CPU), I've has the most fun with these + a couple iMinis, and the x0x box...Glitchboards on each of the iMPCs with vocal, chip, or robot kits gives me grins

  • I cant take the crashing just trying to load inter app audio. Its a mess man so is the impc pro app Its so disappointing

It definitely over reaches its stability with attempts to integrate IAA and iMPC pro, I'm happiest with it when I keep it simple.

  • TT was one of my first app for making music, I love the concept of this app ,but I am disappointed that the developers didn’t update with new features and fix outstanding issues, especially the crashing with IAA.
I would like to see the following added
    1: More slots for instruments
    2. A more modern UI
    3. New instruments added
    4. A timeline arrangement for tracks
    5. Fix IAA issues
    6. Fix constant crashing especially when IAA is used
    7. Better CPU usage.
    8. AudioBus support

I think users would be happy for such a update, feel free to add to list.

A similar app, scaled down is called RhythmStudio. It might suit you better since it's universal and without IAPs.

  • I cant say its not worth getting....since its free..... but the workflow just wasnt for me, and I think Retronyms has been opposed to Audiobus for so long is because they wanted people to buy their in app purchases for Tabletop. They did add a way to use IAA at some point, but I was just never a fan of working with it. I just feel like Retronyms completely ignored its users when we asked over and over for Audiobus in IMPC and IMPC pro....it's not a big deal now with IAA and Audio unit..... but when we didnt have other alternatives besides Audiobus, I just feel like Retronyms didnt care when we asked for it.

Yeh, it's fun. Useful? Not so much.
Sequencing with the tb-303 old-school type step-by-step pattern entry is fun in an oddly masochistic way. Good way to kill some time on the phone out in the parking lot while the wife shops (forever).

I might give it a little more credit than @wim, but not a whole lot. It IS fun, but as mentioned: Old school...

That did sound a but more negative than I intended. I have a real soft spot for this app, and was truly warmed at heart when it got updated recently, and was saved from the 32bit cull.

This is something I'm busy scrawling on my whiteboard for the day, but it works here (and lots of other places as well in this fine abattoir of song...): Give up the notion that you must be sure of what you are doing. Instead, surrender to what is real within you, for that alone is sure. (Baruch Spinoza)

  • I've made a few tracks in tabletop but something about it just doesn't totally gel with me. The main issue I have is the way presets and automation are handled, i tend to start from init and tweak as the track evolves. In Gadget this is fine in tabletop you'll often just change it for the loop and end up doing more fiddling getting your synths to line up through the track.

Which is the killer part of the app when on the phone out in the parking lot while the wife shops (forever). Often wish others had the same facility....
