IConnectivity ICA4+ and NI Komplete Kontrol question
Hey hey,
Wondering if there's anyone out there who has both.
Is it possible to use a Komplete Kontrol S Series Keyboard in MIDI mode with iOS apps using the ICA4+ as a host? Hoping it's possible to bypass the computer using the special powers of the ICA4+.
Any help would be much appreciated!

well, there's no reason why the midi DIN plugs shouldn't work as expected with an iCA4+ in IOS.
But possibly your question included a (hidden) 'what if the PC is simultanously connected via USB ?'
no idea about the latter, but should be mentioned in NI's manual.

The DIN MIDI ports on the Komplete Kontrol series reportedly don't actually do anything, frustratingly, so it's only through USB midi, if it works. Most people seem to need routing software like MidiOx on a computer to get the KK keyboards to talk to external midi gear, so hoping I can set it up in iConfig and let the interface do the routing instead of a computer.
Short version of the story - the KK series is listed as Class Compliant, so I'm hoping it should work through USB midi without a computer, but I haven't found definitive proof that this is possible, even though logic says it should be.
I'll be honest. Native instruments are scumbags. My traktor Z1, audio4dj , traktoraudio2 and a bunch of other native instruments stuff is just not being used anymore due to them almost never being actually class compliant. Having to use only their apps is a dickish move on their part. I can honestly say I will never use any of their hardware ever again. I'm happy with their software on PC though. Reaktor, traktor 2, kontakt etc are used quite often even now....
I have a Komplete Kontrol keyboard and an ICA2+. I've been able to play my keyboard and control my iPad apps.
I plug the keyboard directly into the computer and the ICA2+ directly into the computer. And the iPad into the ICA2+. And it works.
Unfortunately, my ICA2+ isn't working now...
Thanks, great to know it works in that setup you described. Bummer that it's not working for you anymore. Did you ever try hooking up the KK to the ICA2+ host port without the computer in the middle? That's basically the main thing I'd like to know.
That's a bummer to hear.
I recently bought Komplete 11 to use with Ableton, and I'm just getting started with Kontakt and Reaktor, so the KK S series is very attractive - I've tested it and the keys feel great, and there's enough in Komplete that it's more than worthwhile just for that.
But even if I can get it to work as a simple midi keyboard fof iOS and external gear without using a computer, it's still a major "closed system" letdown that the scale, chord and arpeggiator modes don't work outside of NI products. A real missed opportuniy there, and honestly I think they'd sell a lot more if those modes were available. It's an anti-consumer way of doing things, but damn, the products are good enough that I'm still seriously interested.
the original question seemed about the DIN midi connectors and I assumed you wanted them as an IOS path while the USB port delivers midi to your Mac/PC.
That way no additonal cabling/hub would be required.
The keyboard possibly transmits only clock information (as on some BOSS gear) on the DIN ports, which is a bit strange for a keyboard, but there might be a reason: timing can be much more reliable on a digital connection in comparison to the (slow) analog transmission on the taditional port.
Anyway, the USB port will work without a computer, otherwise the thing would be completely useless.
In that case you either have to replug or use a hub (which is supported by iCA as written in their documentation) if you want both system connected.
That didn't work for me. I had to plug my S49 into the computer or I couldn't get Komplete Kontrol to work. I'm not saying it wouldn't work for somebody else.
The scale, chord and arpeggiator modes works with ALL VSTs, not just NI. But you have to load Komplete Kontrol, click the downward arrow next to the magnifying glass and then select Plugins.
In fact, you can use those features even if you don't own an NI keyboard, just by using the Komplete Kontrol software.
That's awesome, didn't know that actually. I wonder if there's a way to get those modes working with external hardware gear somehow...
