This is really really good
It's sponsored by the Onsong Devs.
What a great idea. I'd love to see more educational apps like this focusing on styles that I'm not very familiar with, rather than more "100 guitar-wanking riffs".
Checked out video for it on YouTube by the creator. Actually seems really cool. Really well put together, educational, and feature-rich. Despite not really having an interest in the style of music before I am actually quite interested in this. Off to listen to some African guitar!
Franco and tp ok jazz might be a good starting point.
Warning...guitars only get going 20 mins into most songs..
@commonstookie - "Warning...guitars only get going 20 mins into most songs" Not really. Some songs open up with incendiary lines. There are the rhythm guitar parts and then the solos but then solos are also interspersed between the rhythm guitars. The rhythm guitar parts are the cool stuff here because they demand dexterity. The soloists use sixths, tenths and linear lines for maximum excitement. Franco, Dr Nico, Tabu Ley, Papa Wemba, Diblo Dibala, Kanda Bongo Man are great starting points. Also Lipua Lipua. These guitarists do some wicked guitar gymnastics and if you can play only 50% of what they do, you'll be flying all over the fretboard in no time. And your rhythmic playing will jump to another level. Summer sounds. Trust me ;
Another Charlie Gillet fan?
Never heard of Charlie Gillet until today. I'm a guitar player who knows his guitar styles. Musicologist? Not moi.
Charlie, was a (London) radio presenter. The artists you mentioned and others featured on his shows in the 80's.He played a big part in introducing African Music/artists to a uk audience during the 80s/90s.
I didn't manage to see Franco live, but saw Papa Noel(a guitarist that played with ok jazz),Wemba,Zani Diabate,Thomas mapfumo and others.
I'm not a musician but listen to as much of it, from as many places as I'm able to.
Since you mentioned CG, I've read some bits about him on the net. Awesome guy. Cheers for that. There is a whole lot of information on African music in this app which indicates a lot of research went into producing it. For me the tab and score on Soukous alone is worth the money. Those criss-cross guitars just sound amazing.
It is a awesome app. Really expanding my horizons. Not only guitar but the other instrumentation.
Very tempted. Always been intrigued with the style. Adding link to their web site...

Got it yesterday. Great app for learning this style.
Got it yesterday too. Some nice songs, and it looks like a great learning tool. I see that tabs are supported too, but if can't find how to switch to them from std. notation. Has anyone figured that out?
Tap the three lines in the lower right corner then pick a guitar.
Got it. Thanks @TedBPhx.
Belated thanks to TedBPHx as well. Before seeing that tip, the only tab I could see was for the last song, which is a wonderful solo guitar piece.
Love this app...
This is on sale right now for $6.99
Can't pass it up for $6.99. Thanks for the reminder.
I got the Guitafrica app since 2 years but i still can connect it to Audiobus. It shows up in the input app list but when i launch it, it keeps the sleeping icon despite the app is well launched...
Any idea?
Wow old bump but I've never heard of this and I'm super interested. I love African guitar music.
