Fender Mustang GT 40 amp as audio interface for iOS

"GT" is the third generation ("generation three"?) of Fender Mustang modeling amps. The second generation could send its output via USB to an iPhone or iPad with a Camera Connection Kit (CCK). I've had the GT for a couple days and thought I would report. The third generation can also send its audio via USB to an iDevice, but when you plug it in, the iDevice says there is insufficient power. A workaround, which wasn't necessary on the v2 amps, is a USB hub. In my testing, with an iPad Air and iPod Touch 5G, the hub doesn't actually need to be powered. Or if it does, the hub's power doesn't need to be plugged in. It seems that just having it in the signal chain persuades the iDevice that there is sufficient power after all.

iDevices that have Bluetooth LE can also stream app output to the Mustang GT, and there's an app to edit the amp settings and effects from your iDevice. This is very convenient if you prefer to sit in the middle of the room instead of right in front of the amp. As of this writing, Bluetooth streaming works better on my iPad Air (iOS v10) than my iPod Touch 5G (iOS v9); I'm not sure why. Bluetooth audio streaming has very noticeable latency, which shouldn't surprise anyone, but if you need something tighter there is still an AUX input to which you can send your iPad or iPod's headphone output. I used this on my v2 Mustang to record jams or sketches with Rock Drum Machine.
