List Your Top 20 Music Making Apps

I know that most of you are Appaholics like me. I use an iPad2 16Gb, and I am trying to free space on my system so that I can do more work and less play in the near future (plus prepare for the iOS7 upgrade). I have approximately 100 apps. I'll probably keep about 50. My goal is to free up 5Gb of space on my tablet so that I can have 3Gb available at all times for the system and Cubasis and other apps to be able to use as they need, and a couple of GB to do my work in. I've removed a lot of stuff so far! I have been prioritizing and re-prioritizing my apps, and making tough decisions to try to cut things down to save space and yet keep the most essential apps. Some of my apps have IAPs and take up more space than the default app uses....but that's beside the point. While working on this project, I came up with a list of my top 20 apps. This does not include everything I want to include, but if I were forced, these would be my last 20 apps I would remove from my tablet (regardless of the size they take up). I will post my top 20, but I'm really, really curious what everyone else's top 20 would be and why...If you were stuck on an island and could only choose 20, what would they be....

Here's mine:

  • Audiobus
  • Audioshare
  • Midibridge
  • Hokusai Audio Editor
  • Cubasis
  • DM1 Drum Machine
  • Alchemy
  • iMini
  • Nave
  • Sunrizer
  • Sampletank
  • Thumbjam
  • Guitarism
  • iFretless Guitar
  • iFretless Bass
  • Jamup Pro
  • Vocalive
  • Turnado
  • Level.24
  • AudioMastering

  • Yeah, same here. The iPad 2 16 gb just isn't big enough, unfortunately. I'm grabbing the new one when it comes out. Irritatingly, I can only run one synth or whatever direct into Cubasis and if I involve effects you can see the steam coming out of the bastard.

Anyhoo, my faves. I like traditional synths and experimental playthings.

    Audiobus
    Alchemy
    Thor
    Sunrizer
    Werkbench
    Yellofier
    GlitchBreaks
    Drums
    WOPR
    Bebot
    Figure
    Addictive Synth
    Samplr
    SampleWiz
    Triqtraq
    Arpeggionome Pro
    Animoog
    Launchkey
    DM1
    iMini

So that's 20 but that's a lot of apps! How about we choose just five, but you're allowed Audiobus as a freebie.

    If it was so...

    Yellofier
    Cubasis
    Figure
    Samplr
    Animoog

  • It's OK to list whatever you want. I just got curious after I started to try to cut things down to recover space. I know we are all app collectors here, so I didn't want to cut things to a bare minimum, but just get everyone's list of average top tier tools. It is interesting to see several in your list that I haven't used or played with: Werkbench, Yellofier, WOPR, Bebot, Triqtraq, and Launchkey... That's what I love about these types of questions (many people hate Best or Top lists. I like seeing others' perspectives and getting ideas from them. :-)

  • I haven't been doing this long enough to have a really good handle on my workflow yet, but so far these are the major players for me:

    • Beatmaker 2 (currently testing Cubasis, might replace it)
    • Audiobus
    • Loopy
    • DM-1
    • SampleTank
    • Figure
    • Magellan
    • Cassini (just started using this when it became AB compatible, new fav)

That's pretty much it for now. I mean, I've got a TON more but I basically play with them and maybe use them for little layers or parts on songs. I'm really, really new to all this so I haven't crafted a real "sound" of my own. So I experiment a lot while trying to see where I want to go with it.

I tore into Animoog for the first time on my lunch today and wow, I can see that becoming a fav real soon...

  • My purchasing has really slowed down lately. Never mind that I don't have any money anyway. ;-) But basically, I'm reaching a point where I have most of my needs met. I'd like to get WOW by Sugarbytes, and the Miraslov Philharmonic IAP, and some other IAPs from some other apps, but by and large, I have most everything I need. There is a new mastering app that is supposed to be coming that I'm interested in........ah, who am I kidding? There will always be something coming along that I'll want to replace something with..... Hehehe..... :-)
