#808DAY
Big up to Roland making the machine that makes some of the most iconic sounds ever and one of the coolest boxes I've yet to own. Also big up to some of the iOS dev who keep that sound alive:
Boom808
MV08
EDGR808
DM1
Patterning

Roland joined the party as well

Yeah, saw that too. Lemme start that birthday wishlist one time.
You forgot to put FunkBox on your list...
T'was only a matter of time

If anyone wants a huge, very high quality sample back for half off ($19.50), https://samplesfrommars.com/products/tr-808-samples
I will vouch for their super-quality.
Not adding a tuning knob to the BD seems a crime!
(Seeing as they added other good stuff not on the original including tuning for some of the samples)
Could argue that Ruismaker belongs on that list as well right?

Rhythm Studio
ReBirth (not completely dead yet)
Some of the circuit models in the 80s Analog Kit (the name is a hint) are based on the circuitry of the 808. But the tuning is subtly different because I wanted to add my own "signature sweetspots". It wasn't my intention to 100% clone the 808
Will untrained ears be able to hear that difference you think?
Mine are about as un-trained as they come, and yes, I can hear the difference. I took some supposedly very good 808 samples and set about trying to replicate pad by pad. The kick went very well, though I couldn't dial in exactly the same sound, it was definitely close enough. I couldn't replicate the snare in most cases. It was noticeably different. I'm not saying in a bad way - just different. I was actually much more able to reproduce the sound using RuismakerFM for the snare.
That said. If there's one thing I've learned from wading through tons of 808 samples and 808 style apps ... the 808 can produce such widely varying sounds that saying what an 808 should sound like is kind of like saying what fresh air should smell like. All I know is Ruismaker sounds great to me. I'd rather mess with it than any 808 app or sample set 9 times out of 10.
Not true. The problem is "808" has become a term for a sound based on mutated samples, not the original drum synthesis on the actual device. A real TR-808 has a very limited soundset. You can't even change the pitch of most of the sounds. There is a true basic bare bones 808 sound. Of course most of the famous recordings featuring a real TR-808 usually were recorded to analog tape and had some gaudy FX applied to some of the sound in the mix. It had individual outputs for each sound. Post-1987 however most of the 808 sounds heard on records were from samplers really.
I used to own the real thing.
Yes, untrained ears will definitely hear a difference in a 1:1 Pepsi test. In a mix, perhaps not. But I just wanted to capture the spirit of the 808, not clone it. Funny thing is, as @wim and @coolie also mentioned, most people don't even know what a 'dry' 808 sounds like anymore..
Agreed. Why clone it? Been done to death.
I've read and listened to more than one professional who has said that they did vary even from machine to machine. But that wasn't the point. We're saying the same thing, just in different ways. I don't see it as a "problem" though, it all sounds good to me.
Anyone clocked the 808 on fleabay going for a $1000 more than the usual current asking price ? And all because it was owned by scissor sisters ...I tell ya , the worlds gone crazy
now if it was John Robies own personal unit..
Oh hello
