Any Roland TB-3 users here?
I played today with a Roland - TB-3 (the new version of the TB303) and it kept me enthousiast. Any users on this forum that use this instrument, because I'm curious how it compares to 303 apps as for example Bram Bos's Ruismaker Troublemaker.

Yes, I own both the Tb-3 and the newer Tb-03, but I'm not the right person to make a comparison
i believe you mean Troublemaker, which is not a 303 clone.
I would actually be interested in your thoughts. A no-hype assessment from the Troublemaker creator would be most welcome.
I actually used the TB-03 as a point of reference for Troublemaker. Both the TB3 and the TB-03 have a somewhat flawed implementation of the accent behavior. Look up the "303 gimmick circuit" for lots of really nerdy hardcore discussion about it. So I've tried to implement that properly in Troublemaker. Of the two Rolands, the 03 is obviously the closest, although I dislike some of the extremes of the filter settings, which to my ears go beyond what the originals did.
The TB-3 has a lovely 'liquid' quality in its square mode, which is not necessarily really authentic but rather pleasant to listen to. It is also much more bass-heavy than the 'real thing'. The actual 303 has a bunch of high pass filters/ DC blockers which account for its nasal, raspy mid-heavy sound. The 03 approximates this much closer.
I've spent weeks collecting dry 303 samples to finetune the sound to create the 'Troublemaker sound' but it's quite possible that Roland used one particular pristine 303 from their vaults to base the TB-03's settings on.
In the end, no 303 will ever sound the same as the next - and many people don't even know what a dry 303 sounds like and have come to expect the aggressively saturated overdriven sound you typically hear in acid tracks - whereas the box can also sound quite mellow and delicate.
I think the TB-03 is a really fun product. It's close enough to a real 303 to be a musically useful 303 substitute and to be a really fun box to play around with. The TB-3 lacks some crucial knobs and sound-characteristics to be a real clone but is a joy to program with its touchpad sequencer.
Fascinating stuff @brambos! Here's to Phuture, Hardfloor, Plastikman, etc!!
Have you ever connected with Posthuman? I can see a good collabo happening there. Keeping the spirit of acid house music alive...
I sold my old vintage Roland MC-202 last year, but when I had it I considered it to be more 303-like than a real 303.
lol yes you are your perfect lol
corrected
Thanks for giving us this interesting background info!
I have the TB-3- I love it- I will never get rid of it. I had the TB- 03- it was ok to play with - but I soon got tired of it- there is no real time record facility- which I found I missed from the TB3 and also the distortion/ overdrive effects are very poor. They vanish into nothing when turned up. The TB3 is more fun and much better value for money- and to me sounds every bit as good.
They are both far better than any/ all of the 303 emulators on iOS if you are looking for that famous 303 sound. You can get the squelchy mind bending acid type sounds on both of them which are simply out of reach of Rebirth, Troublemaker and all the rest of them. Having said that you can still get that type of groove out of the iOS apps- they are not a million miles away (but not really terribly close either)- and they are of course a fraction of the price- but they can sound very good in their own way. The difference is the Roland ACB technology which provides a very accurate reproduction of the TB303 sounds/performance.
Well, i'm not a die hard fan of the 303. And i like smooth, subtle, clean acid, not that overdriven, frenentic, squelchy kind so .... i had the tb-3 and liked it but troublemaker sounds as good to me and it has the mutations etc.
Had the TB3 too and I don't miss it:
Sounds not so editable, fewer knobs and the touchpad didn't feel great.
Nice sequencer though.
Overall sound better than iOS 303s but not 25/30 times better.
I'm very happy with Troublemaker.
Better sequencer too.
I listened very closely to the TB-3, and decided for Troublemaker. I am quite fine with this decision (which is quite remarkable because i am a real sucker for hardware synhts).
I will give the Roland SE-02 a long and intensive listening session, because i am also interested in variation of sounds. The SE-02 by no means sounds like an acid machine, but the SE-02 is having a nice sequencer with glide option and some very aggressive and fascinating possibilities for analog sound design.
(on the other i am very satisfied with my Korg Monologue)
I have a tb-3 and troublemaker and the best thing of troublemaker is the random function but the last two updates i think the random is not so fun. And i think tne sound on both are good
If you set the scale mode to "chromatic" it will be essentially the same as the 'old' random feature
And now is fun again thanx for the tip and for the app @brambos !!!!! The best random function in an app, everytime i push random a cool bassline comes out.
nope but im getting that roland tr08
I have the TB-3 and found it boring. Was really looking forward to it because of the sequencer but it is so lackluster compared to what I can do on the iPad.
I have the tb-3. It's part of my hard-ware set-up. It's definitely a lot of fun and sounds pretty good. Not a huge fan of the touchpad but it does add a little something i guess. I have most of the really good I-pad apps but I've never really been able to integrate the iPad into my set-up. I need to work on that because theres so much amazing stuff on ios.
I use a mx-1, tr-8, monologue, rc-505, bs2 and tb3 in the hardware set up. It's cool how they all sync via usb. Id prob use the iPad more in the har5dware setup if i could sync it.
I have the TB-03. I love sending the CV out to my Eurorack into quantizers, sample and hold and other modules before sending it into the pitch of the VCO to get different variations of the melody. Then I hit the new random pattern button on the TB-03 synced to the TR-09, turn the knobs on the Eurorack modules and start grinning from ear to ear.
