12.9 Pro speakers blow 10.5 out of the water
Am really surprised at the difference in sound quality between the two systems. The 12.9 has much deeper richer sound. Fuller bass without distortion and clear mids nice treble. The 10.5 seems slightly more treble heavy and lacking bass in comparison. Obviously somewhat to do with the bigger casing in the 12.9.
If it wasn't for this I would say the 10.5 is an all round better set up for me when portability weight storage ram etc is considered, but those 12.9 speakers sound even better than my MacBook Pro retina 2016.
My dilema (first world problems) still abounds. The lightness and super sveltly slick 'pick up and go' of the 10.5 vs full screen keyboard and gorgeous speakers of the slightly more donut loving 12.9 which feels heavier and therefore slightly more uncomfortable on my lap. (I'm not a giant 5'7)

I like my 10.5 and prefer the smaller/lighter size... and with regard to the speakers, I noticed a little bit of difference between the two, but I wouldn't use the phrase "blows out of the water" to describe the difference. The stereo stage is a little better with the 12.9, and maybe a bit fuller... likely attributed to there being a little more distance between each speaker I think.
I will say about the speakers on the 10.5, than often I'm using it for audio without headphones, and it sounds like there are frequencies coming from areas no where near the iPad itself. It's hard to explain, but I often find myself muting it to verify if the sounds I'm hearing from more behind me, and off away from where I'm sitting, etc. are coming from the iPad or something else in the room. They're always strangely coming from the iPad.
There's some weird voodoo Apple achieved with these last Pro speaker advancements.
Yes they have achieved some fabulous spacial acoustics.
Re the sound quality of the 12.9 it really is more than stereo stage. Hugely noticeable difference.
I have them side by side here and have tested a variety of different music genres and the difference is like night and day.
AUs like Posion on the 12.9 play lower bass frequencies that do not even register on the 10.5.
It really makes the music production process so much more pleasureable. However I have decided to stick with the 10 as convenience of portability wins out.
I only compared them a couple of times in the store... and had to battle annoying children trying to bogart them to play games while their parents shopped.
Yes, there was a difference in sound, but it wouldn't have mattered to me much. I'd already pretty much made up my mind that the 10.5 is what I was wanted... for the size and weight mainly. I have a slot on my motorcycle that my Air2 went into. There was some wiggle room and after trying a few protective case combos, found one that would allow the 10.5 to fit in also. I also like to backpack some in other countries, so every little bit of space and weight makes a difference.
I didn't really expect the 10.5 to be that much different than the 9.7 in how much more screen is opened up, but was pleasantly surprised.
Would in no way disparage the 12.9 though. It's very nice too. But in the end, I mostly use my mobile devices in a mobile capacity and I think the 10.5 even, is already pushing the limit of what I'd want to carry around with me.
Awesome. What a great combo. A motorbike and an iPad 10.5. Biking around Europe. Being inspired by everything you come across. Sounds cool
And the 10.5” blows my old Air 2 out of the water
Of course you get better bass response with a larger “cabinet” but for the size, I think the 10.5 is very good.
I never would have this problem fortunately because in all of my wildest dreams I would never consider using the device speakers for sounds. Headphones or Iloud sound so vastly superior it would be no contest at all.
I've been having a hard time deciding whether to get the 12.9 inch or 10.5 inch iPad Pro 2017 model but if the speakers and stereo image and bass are superior on the 12.9 inch then I think I've decided to go for the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. However I forgot that there seems to be a audio issue with the headphone jack on both 2017 models of the iPad Pro that is putting me off buying.
I was concerned about that too, and even convinced myself at first I could tell what they were talking about. However, in practice, for my use and two weeks in now... I can't really see any problems. If I don't obsess on those threads, and just use the dang thing as I'd intended, I don't notice any flaws at all.
Of course I can only speak from my own experience. I think there's a general tendency to put a hyper-critical microscopic lens on any new piece of electronics or software with a targeted focus to find the cracks and not what's great. I see this with new cameras on photography forums too. Users will focus totally on some new jpeg processing engine and the level of smearing or noise they can find down at the pixel level, without paying any attention to the incredible overall imaging it's capable of.
The 10.5 is excellent for the size that's for sure.
Yes that's what I thought until I realised how good the 12.9 was.
What I found after a while was that I was using the 12 a lot without headphones, whereas with the 10 I would always use headphones. I hadn't even noticed I was doing this, which is what got me to start comparing the sound quality. I realised I was enjoying the sound from the iPad 12 speakers more than the 10. However if out and about, making hit records in your local coffee shop
, you'll have to use headphones anyway, so in some respects it's much of a muchness.
I quite like the idea of not being reliant on headphones all the time though as sometimes I get ear fatigue. But it's all horse for courses. The 10.5 is amazing.
Iloud exclusively here actually except for those occasions when I want to go silent out of consideration for others. Most always people want to listen to the iLoud because it really is that good. Everyone who has heard music on it, YouTube or internal music production say the same thing and immediately want to know the price. I sometimes use internal but only if sound quality would not be an issue as in a news broadcast or a video chat ect.
I haven't had the headphone jack issue so far touch wood. And I'm banking on the AU limit / ram issue being a software issue, and being rectified by ios11 release. Fingers crossed for that.
Re the sound quality the speakers are defo richer and fuller on the 12, and likely so due to the larger footprint, however regardless, for me at least, it makes the listening experience more enjoyable, when not using headphones, which is what it's all about I would have thought.
Having said that, I'm an audiophile, and possibly for the majority and most use cases many people may not even notice a hugely distinct difference, even though I do. Some Reddit forums have discussed this though and corroborated what I thought. Clearly millions of people love the 10.5, sound included, and rightly so. Brilliant machine, and for the size it's superb.
I ,like you, am torn, and keep swaying in preference from one to the other. Holding the 10.5 like a super light a5 book yet with so much power is really cool, but I'm wondering if further down the line I will regret not having the extra screen size if apps start utilising split screen a lot more, and if I end up mixing in auria as opposed to desktop Logic Pro.
Practically though, using the 12 on the tube is slightly cumbersome, the 10 is perfect, but then again I'm always getting on and off at different stations, so I find making music on the subway is not the most ideal. And once bm3 comes out on the iPhone I can use that. Therefore the 10 isn't as important in that situation. On a plane or train there is more room, so the 12 is fine.
I'm swaying more towards the 12 now after having thought I had decided on the 10 ha.
I went to my local Apple Store today and tried out the speakers on the iPad Pro 12.9 inch model. I notice a difference too. The stereo field seems to be a lot wider and the audio a little bit richer with bass. The audio seems to be a little bit louder too.
Hey triton I just checked out iloud as I wasn't sure what you were referring to. Sounds really good. That has actually made me think about sticking with the 10.5 now, though I'm more used to a two monitor set up for that stereo image, so hard to imagine what a one monitor setup will be like.
