Lately I am mostly running sequencers into a PC (Chordflow, midilfos, Future Drummer, Patterning). So given the real estate on my desk and the commute factor I prefer the smaller ipads. Sometimes I will just use two ipads by themselves on the train. There are so many different combinations and configurations. I tend not to max out a single ipad now as trying to keep it all under one roof just became too frustrating. I know some people seem to manage well with it but for me I need a bit of this, a bit of that etc.

so I took the plunge on this one, 128 GB, 449 € (Conrad)
should be good enough for a while (three years or so), next stop down the line: iZotope Spire Studio (whenever it will be available over here)

I have the 128 version, which is more than enough. You can plug USB3 sticks in it if you need more saving space.
I was strongly contemplating buying the new Pro, but I see no reason for it. My iPad Pro has almost the same benchmarks as my 2011 desktop Mac with Pro Tools
I guess the next iPad Pro 2018 or 19 will be worth waiting for. The new iOS will by then be mature and well implemented in software.

10.5 Pro gets my vote. I also have the original 12.9 which is amazing but now my second fav and home rig as it’s just cumbersome to travel with and hard on the wrist which basically cuts down on the hole mobile thing iPads were essentially created for. I like to create laying on the couch, subway, etc as well as at a table so the 10.5 is the perfect size and weight. It can be held with one hand whilst you tweak knobs with the Pencil. It also fits in many cool, inexpensive tiny bags. I use a tiny leather tactical sling pack that fits my 10.5, all dongles, Roli blocks, charger, chords, etc.
In terms of performance it seems slightly snappier than my 12.9 and the battery lasts much longer and chargers much quicker. I believe this is due to better processing with slightly smaller screen to power.
At any rate, i suggest buying used if available in your area. Here in America we have OfferUp, Craigslist, etc where you can buy popular items like iPad for nickels on the dollar. I just purchased a brand new 11” iPad Pro for $650. IMO, it sucks for music tho.

@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr ... not sure if I am answering your question correctly, but on the back of every iPad is a tiny serial number. Google search that for the model and year. IMO a used Pro2 is optimum. 4gb ram, The speed is terrific, the size just right for holding in one hand while spending hours tapping away with the other when mixing. And just one model behind the latest. If money is a problem the original Pro would be good, too. That being said I used an iPad4 which I got for $150 and made a lot of music on it, but it was slow and OS 10.3, so a lot of apps won't work on it including the latest GarageBand.
You can still get the previous generation iPad Pro 10.5 from Apple website. Then you would not have to worry about what version your getting.
This is the iPad I own. No complains here. 200$ cheaper than current model. Go Apple refurbished for a extra 120$ off.

Because multi-core performance really doesn't matter in IOS audio world (all hosts are still running just on single core), i think most important criterium is single core performance. There, i think best performance/price ratio has non-pro 2018 iPad model ..
2018 PRO models are totally not worth the price , cause they are best mostly in multicore performance, but not that much in single core performance (considering price, compared to non-pro 2018 model of course)
For starters no headphone jack or compatibility with my fav cans even with dongle which really blows. i am still experiencing audio glitches and bugs that only appear on my 11”. Also, many apps I love aren’t optimized for it yet and you have to deal with thick black borders because of different aspect ratio.
If you have a first gen 10.5 or 12.9 there is absolutely no reason to upgrade imo.
IMO whenever Apple makes a radical change to the design and form factor, it's best to skip that generation, and either buy the old model or wait for the next one.
For example: iPad 3 with the new retina display, iPad 2 or iPad 4 were better buys. Same with the 1st gen iPad Air, the Air 2 was much better. This generation of iPad Pros have too many issues that need to be ironed out, the 2nd gen Pros are a better buy right now, and next year's models will be much better than this generation.
Agreed. And again, I strongly recommend checking refurb, used, reseller markets first. Early adoption is an affliction for some but advantage for smart consumers and, you can still add Apple care to insure.
Still having trouble with the 11", @WillieNegus and anyone else with one? Its single core benchmarks and CPU speed far exceed that of the older 10.5"
do the ipad Pros 11" and 12,9 work with the usb3 to lightning adapter ? if i use an usb c adapter to connect it?
Not really having any trouble in terms of the audio bug but I still wouldn’t recommend it over a used 10.5. I don’t experience any noticeable performance gains and the lack of phone jack and home button is annoying for music production and doesn’t justify the price. Yet. Also, there are still many of my fav midi controllers, interfaces, etc not yet compatible.
My controversial answer: iPad Pro 2017. I compared against the new 2018 Pro and new 2019 Mini and for me the 2017 Pro could handle more simultaneous music apps than either of the others, for the way I make iOS music anyways.

Currently best performance/price ratio model is Mini 5 (or Air 3). Single-core performance is almost same like 2018 pro models. (4900 vs. 4700).
Additionally, because of there is jack connector, there is another advantage - with jack connected, device switches to 44 khz sample rate. Based on my observations, at 48 khz sample rate, especially with small buffer size (128 and especially 64) there are serious issues related to CPU throttling (generally in all audio apps) - dropouts even with single instance of not CPU hungry synth. No idea if it is just A12/A12x specific or it is iOS 12 specific - hard to say.. i saw reported this from users from devices with A12 and A12x cpu ..
At 44 khz there are no issues (or at least significantly less issues) - so ironically jack connector on new Mini5/Air3 not just allows to connect headphones, but allows also avoid 48khz (which is not possible on 2018 PRO models)
I bought a new Air 3 for my fiancé and I feel my 2017 10.5 is better especially if you can find one used which where I live US, is very easy. I purchased my 512gb model (no Air that size available) for $450 a year ago vs over $650 for a smaller Air 3. My pro screen is visibly much better (120hz Pro Motion vs 60hz), 4 speakers vs 2 (huge difference). Yes the new Air has a new chip but less RAM which makes a difference if you use many AU instances. Apps do launch quicker on the Air 3, iPad Pro 11” and there is less Bluetooth latency but neither of those factors justify spending more for either new models vs buying a used pro imo.

I get an iPad Air 3 64go yesterday and i make some AUM test vs my iPad Air 2.
Verdict the new iPad Air 3 can andle many cpu heavy synth when my old ipad air 2 cant.
Im happy now i have 2 ipad connected to my audio4+ and my Octatrack.
Pretty good setup with a lot of routing capability 🧪
