lessons

Hi

I was thinking about how lots of people are happy to pay £20/£30 an hour for instrument lessons and was wondering whether people interested in iOS music production would do the same if the devs or people like Doug/Jacob/Mitch etc offered skype lessons, running you through how to get the best from a particular app.

I emailed Doug @thesoundtestroom about it and we came to the conclusion that while it was a good idea, not many people would be happy to pay for this service, especially considering the amount of free information that it is made available online already.

The sticking point for this is probably going to be price, lets face it, a lot of us making music via the IOS platform, love a bargain ( I certainly include myself in this.)

If an app like sunvox or Different Drummer only costs a few quid, paying Twenty or more to have the Dev or someone else explain it to you may seem a lot but I imagine it would be money well spent.

But, I'm still curious, how many of you would be interested in something like this? If you are , what would you consider a reasonable price for an hour of someone's time?

Regards,
kin

  • If an app cannot be figured out by trial and error, the developer's website, reading stuff here and watching YouTube...then it is beyond hope.

  • It's a great idea and certainly is funny to consider in iOS world, where the cost of a 45 minute session is likely to be more than the cost of a lot of apps.
If the instructor is a clear communicator and the video link supports the exchange, I think it could work.

If I were offering instruction, I'd probably start at something between 20-30€ per 45 minutes. I feel that might be a sweet spot between value for a client and helping the instructor pay the bills. Then once I felt like I was really offering value, and if the market was there, I might raise the price a bit. Of course lower prices are more attractive, but it ultimately depends on cost of living considerations and what the market will bear.

If I knew the instructor was a good communicator, had expertise in what I was interested in learning about, was able to adapt to what I already know and work from there, and if I knew I'd be spending more time doing than listening, I'd be happy to pay that price for something I haven't quite got my head around yet, like Model 15.

Setting goals and establishing expectations at the start always helps. What does the client want from the session, or potential series of sessions? Will there be "homework"? Sometimes online instructors offer free 15 sessions just to talk these things through.

Hope these thoughts are useful in some way. :)

  • I would be interested in this. I would think that about £15 per hour would be about right- considering that their is no training or registration involved. There are apps that I have not yet figured. I had a recent experience buying an app- there was no manual- you tube tutorials- developer help or response here to be had- no replies at all.
Come to think of it I have several apps that I don't/ can't use fully despite there being help available.
Or sometimes I just don't know where to start- and have feel overwhelmed with my own ignorance to even begin.
I do wish that having a manual should be mandatory for app producers.
Don't get me wrong though- I can still produce plenty of material that I am very happy with using the apps I can understand.

  • Yea i dont think it would work with teaching apps, but could work on teaching music theory, giving some tricks and tips on production etc.

Anyways Henny Tha Bizness does some 1 on 1 consultations, and he is a well established music producer, who does ios stuff as well on youtube:

I'll provide one on one for Different Drummer for a beer/session.

Sorry if I'm undercutting you Peter (DD Dev), so the offer is only good on your overflow.

  • In theory its cool but I doubt there would be many who would pay

Judging by the complaints about app prices at times lol

On the other hand.. iOS synths come out every other week so do u mean to say that most of us don't understand basic synthesis yet lol

Maybe an iOS music masterclass webinar could happen to cover all angles??

Now there is an app that definitely need one to one tuition, great idea

  • This is essentially what Groove3 and Ask Audio are all about, and they do provide instruction on many iPad apps, although not so many as computer ones.
