Ruismaker FM tips and tricks?

Ok - I'm new the the whole Ruismaker thing and I just got Ruismaker FM today. Any cool tips/tricks I should know about? I picked up DM2 last week and while they are similar, I can already see some cool differences. Any preference for one over the other?

  • I got both and just dive in and enjoy!
I'm driving it via midi GM mode from Beatonal app. Super awesome!

  • I have both, but havent used dm2 pretty much at all since ruismaker came out, since its not an au. What i like to do with ruismakers is to load them on bm3s pad, sample the drums hits to bm3 and sequence on it.

I really like some sounds i can make with dm2, but drum sounds are so plenty when you have ruismakers and other drum sources, that i havent really missed dm2.

  • Just a small one concerning snares and the noise waveform. The default snare starts with a noise waveform. Trying to modulate a noise waveform doesn't do anything so don't even bother with those two controls in that case.

To get more flexibility for snare sounds, start with another wave form such as sine and then modulate it with the noise waveform (which will make the amount knob effective) or the random waveform (which will make both pitch and amount effective). Combined with pitch, attack, and decay knobs you can get a lot more snare type sounds than by starting with the noise waveform.

  • And don't foret the PKF knob. It can have a big effect sometimes.

Do you use Beatonal as a midi controller for Ruismaker FM in standalone sequencer mode or through a host like BM3?
And by "GM mode", do you mean GM Keymap or something else?

Yes, the PKF (peaking filter) is really important. It greatly boosts a narrow part of the frequency spectrum. So for hissy hats you want to boost the higher part of the frequency range, for booming kicks obviously somewhere in the lower ranges and for hollow snares typically somewhere in the middle.

The HPF (high pass filter) removes low frequencies and rumble. Essential for snappy snares and nice airy high hats etc.

I'm using it to drive either the AUv3 instances or standalone but better the AU because I really like the Eucledian sequencer and with Link they all play in perfect sync!

I hit the little GM button on Ruismaker UI and it just works perfectly in GM key map I think.

  • Trying to get Ruis FM > FunkBox working in AB3 MIDI lane. No sound. Anyone else?

Is Funkbox mapped to the right midi keys?

I don't know where to map keys in FunkBox. I get two drum sounds mapping Ruis so I'm close. :)

Not sure what I'm playing at right now though as I'm supposed to be making the boys breakfast and getting ready for work. See what trouble you're causing!

  • I don't have Funkbox, so I don't know either, but these are the keys for Ruismaker. FM uses the first 6 of these. The sequencer sends out the default key mapping:

so each midi note out is on a different channel?

No, they're on the same MIDI channel. These refer to the instrument channels in Ruismaker.

    That's neat. Thanks man.

  • The wave forms are midi controllable, so I change them with midi lfos while it's playing to animate the sound. Good stuff!
