Synthesizers, School Me...

Although I've been collecting many amazing apps over the years, my focus has always been on my guitar playing, singing and looping. My launchpad Pros have really helped me branch out in my liveloop sessions. I feel very complete with my DAWS, drums, effects, grooveboxes, miditools and samplers, etc. I have a small collection of decent synthesizers as far as I can tell, but I'm looking for recommendations because there are so many to choose from, and this is not really my bag. I'm specifically referring to synthesizers and not instrument apps such as ThumbJam. Here's a list of what I have so far...

Sunrizer, launchkey, animoog, Nanologue, Mersenne, Thor, Magellan, Xynthesizer, Ripplemaker, Phasemaker, Troublemaker, DRC, FugueMachine

There are so many that I've had on my radar for a while but I'm just very indecisive about what to buy. Ableton link and audio units are preferable... Thanks!

  • I would recommend Poison -202, Kaspar and Mood as my top picks. Then for more unique sounds, something like Animoog or SynthScaper. Then just get the rest of them because once you start, you can't stop. Z3TA+ is still on my wish list but today my friends here made Nave seem more appealing so Z3TA will have to wait till another day and Nave is as good as everyone recommend. Word of warning, YouTub is like synthesizer crack and Doug Woods and Jakob Haq are the dealers.

  • What sounds are you looking for?

  • Synthmaster One is coming out soon, will be an AU and likely have a big old kick ass library like the original Synthmaster. I am more of a preset tweaker then into making patches from scratch.

  • You should pick up Figure and Synth Book, because they're FREE!

well, not about to teach you, but to add the hardcore stuff ;)

iVCS3 - problaby the most 'analog' in IOS and difficult to figure out, just like the original. Wiered but great tone. Brian Eno played one in his Roxy days and Jarré used several.

Moog Model-15 - gets the famous Moog tone just right, no compromise.

Wavemapper - Wavetable synthesis by it's inventor, modern version of the classic PPG tone, theory behind oscillators is complex, excellent filter.

Infinite (also by PPG) extends the wavetable theme into new dimensions.
The widest range of sounds (within a single patch) that I'm aware of.

NFM is an FM synth that revitalizes the original DX-7 sound in a very accurate way.

    honourable mentions, because no synths:
M3000 Mellotron by Omenie - as close to the original as can be.
Peter Vogel CMI - the sampler that defined the sound of the eighties, perfect emulation including user interface.

These apps (or rather their originals) represent essential milestones in sounddesign and synthesis. Not that you need to have all of them, but they would be a perfect collection of sound history in a nutshell - in excellent sound quality.
(I left out additive synthesis for it's imho sonically too close to FM/Wavetable)
As mentioned: all are in fact demanding as hell, but there are nice fellows here who provide great preset collections.

The music I play is very musical with elements of HipHop, Funk and Ambient World music, with emphasis on improvisation. I'm definitely more into ambient and musical sounding synths as opposed to the over the top electronic ones, but then again like I said it's not my bag and I just don't really know. And if I had it my way I would just keep buying them until my found the one I liked... which is probably what will happen!

    • I tend to have ThumbJam taking up 8 midi channels, Gadget taking 4, and depending on the song...a mixture of other apps, so something that is not too much of a resource hog or would fit nicely, is preferable...
    • Although I like leads and would love those recommendations, but a nice pad or uniquely mellow sounds with character that would go well with my ChordPolyPro progressions is a plus...

    • Also I'm using a Launchpad Pro to play these so I do not have access to pitch and mod wheels... Yet! (MUAHAHAHAHA :scream:)

  • Moog Model 15 is the best sounding synth on iOS IMO. Really fat and warm. I have too many synths really, but this is the one I would keep.

Ambient, musical, unique. I think Kaspar might fit, although it is a bit resource heavy. You’ve pretty much got everything else covered, with strong leads and resonators.

Tip: learn to wrangle the synths you’ve got. I bought just about every synth I could get my hands on, looking for a few specific sounds (think Bleachers, Robyn, Chvrches, Lorde, Stars). Never quite finding them. Then I watched some YouTube videos of the ‘how to sound like’ variety, and soon discovered I could get the sounds I was chasing from just about all the synths I already had. I reckon I could drop all but 3 or 4 now that I know how to control them. Kaspar is an exception due to its massive layering abilities.

Could you possibly point us to one or two of good "how to sound like" videos?

Off the top of my head, this was one I found useful:

The Moog bass sound can be achieved on most dual oscillator synths. 2 saw waves, an octave apart, etc.

Syntorial have a stack of great tutorials.

    Model 15 is my favourite.

Model 15 sounds great but I am not a fan of the visual design at all. Too much pointless panning/zooming and obscured details with those silly cables. Probably cool on the big pro but on my standard 2017 ipad, not fun at all.
