Vox Video on Gated Reverb: How a Recording Studio Mishap Shaped 80s Music

edited August 2017 in General App Discussion

Nice little video about the history of gated reverb...

What do you use in iOS to get this drum sound?

  • The route of least resistance would be to bake the reverb into the drum sample, and then make the sample playback cut off the tail of the reverb.

The authentic way is to send the drums to a reverb, then place a gate after the reverb, side chained to the dry drum sound, so it opens and closes consistently, regardless of the length/volume of the verb.

The advantage of doing it the real way, is being able to fine tune the gate time to the tempo of the song, to get the cut off of the reverb to be in time with the beat.

  • interesting!

After the video there was one about syncopation which was also very interesting.
