Help: Connecting a Digital Drum to iPad via MIDI to USB
My wife bought me a MIDI to USB cable as a birthday gift (she really didn't break her bank account) and I'm completely lost. The goal should be recording MIDI notes to any app.
Ok, I could connect the "MIDI IN" cable to the Drum kit "MIDI OUT" (that's right isn't?). And there I am.
I'd be very grateful for any help about how to setup any app like cubasis or anyone else like Music Studio, Nanostudio...
Thanks at advance.

Do you know the brand of the MIDI to USB cable that you have? That might help us to figure it out for you..
If it's not specifically a MIDI to iOS cable / adapter then you'll most likely need a USB - Lightning adapter (known as Camera Connection Kit)
This is the not YAMAHA cable (it cots about x10). The USB to Lightning is the original from Apple.
Well it says it's plug and play with no driver needed, so maybe its class compliant and it will just work.
Are you saying you already have the Apple USB - Lightning CCK cable?
I have noticed that on some of these kind of USB-MIDI devices the plug labelled "MIDI OUT" should plugged into the MIDI OUT socket of your electronic drums. But you are right that normally you attach a cable from the MIDI OUT socket of one device into the MIDI IN of the second.
Yes, some of the chinese midi-usb adapters have the in and out mislabeled. Mine's like that. Worth trying it both ways.
The status light on the plastic thing on the cable should light up when you hit the drums, if it is sending out midi.
From there you would just need to select the adapter as the midi source in your app. My chinese adapter just comes up as "USB MIDI" or something generic.
If doesn't start working then, it could be you need to change the midi channel the drum thing is on. Most things default to channel 1, but sending on a different channel than the app is listening to would make it not work.
Last, some of the chinese usb-midi adapters don't work, at all. I have one that works great(now, see below), and one that is dead. The lights lighting up when midi happens is a good sign of life. There's some lore in the reviews on amazon about the "good" sellers to get them from.
The one that works, I actually had to resolder a new midi connector on the end, because it made a ground loop, caused some buzzing in the audio when I connected it. The official MIDI spec says not to connect the ground on the input. The chinese usb-midi adapter erroneously does this. Because of this grounding/noise issue, I recommend a different manufacturer, even though they cost more. If the generic chinese one is the only option, plugging everything you are connecting together into one plug strip should lessen the noise.
i have a cable like the one pictured above. it does not work. i ended up getting a roland um-one and it works perfectly. You may need something like that instead.
Thanks.
After some test, connceting the "IN" to the Drums "OUT" I get some drum sounds when hit the pads, worked at least with DPPro and MusicStudio. The "MIDI" and the "IN" ligths are "ON".
One of these days I'll try to connect a YAMAHA keyboard. It should be easier (if it works properly).
So, I can play sounds from FunkBox, DPPro, Boom 808 y 809 on my DrumKit (with lo lag) but I can't get how record into an app when I play rhe drumkit.
2:14 here in Spain. Good night...
