Best iPad screensize for music apps (7.9", 9.7", 10.5" or 12.9")?
I'm planning to do an iPad upgrade any recommendations about the best screensize for music apps. Now using a 9.7" screen and I'm using the iPad mostly at home, but once in a while it has to travel (Public Transport/ Air). Somehow I feel attracted to the 12.9" model, but maybe this is an overkill of screen estate.
Comments
depends on how you use it ... most music apps benefit greatly from the larger screen
More screen real estate is always better, in theory, but I think most, if not all, music apps, do not take advantage of it atm, and they just rescale the GUI so everything looks bigger. It would be nice to fit more tracks in DAWs, etc, but I don't think that is the case yet (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I myself have been considering the middle term 10.5" but it seems there are some issues with it. I'm not on the market for an upgrade, yet, and I've only owned 9.7" models so far.
Everyone's got toast and most of us are passionately right about ours. For me the 12.9 is/was the best piece of technology I've ever bought and while I still have the other smaller versions I never use them (proof of my pudding) and will not except for revisiting any legacy apps that aren't upgraded to 11 etc. I love the 12.9 for music (especially for DAW work), but as a result of the extra real estate also do a lot graphically with it and it has become my default for watching movies. Recommend the magnetic Apple keyboard thingie AND the Apple pencil which I ridiculed upon its first appearance, but now would fight you for etc.
10.5 is perfect for me!
12.9 it’s my favorite... but ONLY applies to optimized apps. Non optimized app suck, same criteria applies to the 10.5 iPad. (Time might take care of this issue for both models)
Overall 9.7 might be the best for the consistency alone (100% optimized apps)
7.9 it’s dead.
interesting, I almost feel the opposite -- some non optimized apps benefit most on the 12.9, like iPolySix, iMS20, lots of other synths including Zeeon, they all become a lot more usable ... some optimized apps by contrast look a bit odd like MitoSynth where I like the design much better in the small version. Any app with scalable piano roll, optimized or not, greatly benefits from the bigger screen imho
If I was going to be doing a lot of music making on the go, I'd stick with a 9.7 or get a 10.5. For prolonged studio work, or gigging, if I could afford it I'd go for the 12.9.
I am debating this right now as well. I am using OnSong a lot to display and work with sheet music. I am using an old 9.7 iPad 3 and it is working pretty well. But the text is just a bit small for my old eyes. It is good enough and usable - but I am thinking about the 10.5. The 12.9 seems a bit large/unwieldy to have sitting on your keyboard and using to read sheet music. Not sure though - I am planning to trek to an Apple Store and look in person before I decide.
I love 7.9.
Not saying it is the 'best' as I am the 'worst' at objectively defining the 'best'.
12.9 it’s the only iPad where scores look as big as if not bigger than sheet of paper.
You’re putting your iPad literally on the keyboard as in over the keys or something like that jajaja? (Sorry if I didn’t understand that correctly), then it’s too large, It’s definitely going to fall. (10.5 would also fall) or you have it on a stand? Then it’s no problem at all (I do that)
I have a nice aluminum metal stand on order to hold the iPad. Right now I'm just using my iPad 3/9.7 by leaning it against the middle column of my keyboard stand.
AudioGus, I have a 7.9 iPad 4 which I love - I use it basically as a sound module (Korg Module, iM1, Neo Soul Keys Studio) with a Korg PlugKey.
I have a 12.9, a couple of 9.7's, and an iPhone...and the 12.9 wins every time for working on music. Benefits for me include precision, readability, onboard speakers, performance. Downsides all pertain to what you'd expect...size, weight, portability and expensive accessories (why I have no keyboard case for it).
Agree. Word for word. Also, some apps that were barely comfortable to use before (Thesys, Xinthesizr...) have come to new life
Thank you all for the comments so far. The 12.9 factor really sounds interesting and got my attention now. I will probably order one and test it intensively and might return it in the end it doesn't suit my needs.
Me too!
