Automate live guitar effects?

Does anyone know which IPad DAW's if any you could use to automate live guitar effects? I'm starting a new project that involves using a click track and after years of onstage singing/playing guitar/tap dancing I'd like to try automating at least the changes between my clean and dirty sounds so I can concentrate on the singing and playing a bit more. I'm seriously considering using my iPad with amp sims for this project

  • Best combo I've found for this is Modstep and FLUX:FX

Takes a bit of figuring out but it's bloody wicked!!! Have a look At my past discussions for a thread explaining how I did it, and I believe that the CCs I mapped it with are actually included in a Modstep template now.

Thanks guys. I've not looked at modstep before. I'll do some research on it

  • I've found one way of doing it in GarageBand but you can only change between two sounds but it might help someone out so I thought I'd post how to do it..

Program a click track or a backing track
Set up two guitar amp tracks
Set the input to the first track as 1
Set the input to the second track as 2
Now press on first track icon and select automation in the menu that pops up and draw volume automation at minimum when you want the track off and 0 or whatever volume you like when you want it on
Now do the same with the second track but with the automation line the opposite to the first track and it's all good :/)

I'm not sure I wanted to douse GarageBand but it does work sweet for two channels

  • that click and/or backing track puzzles me - is that on your personal monitor or live to the audience as well ?
Most guitar amp sims allow various configurations that are easily switchable.
Jamup and Tonestack have a surface mode called Live/Stage with huge buttons.

You may have a look at AUM (Kymatica) which is an excellent multi channel mixer/router for any live situation.
It would allows an amp sim to send to a bus, wich in turn can feed multiple fx channels for special treatment, which can be activated/muted during performance.
Additionally it features playback and record tracks, very versatile.

Traditionally the drummer listens to the click in headphones. No monitor clicks, because everyone in the audience would hear it from the stage.

@Extnctn6 I would think automating vocal effects as well, would be the bee's knees.

  • Yeah the drummer will have the click so it will be muted on my iPad. I've not sussed out how I'm going to sync it so that they start together yet..

I'm unlikely to end up using GarageBand but so far the above is all I've managed to achieve. I'm certainly going to have to buy a better interface as mine is only a cheap one with a single stereo input.

i have auria pro although I find it very buggy so I'm reluctant to use it but I will try automating jam up with it next.

@Processaurus yeah I'd love to be able to do my vocals as well!

I'd be happy though just to automate my main clean/rhythm/lead channels as all my other effects I generally only use when I'm not singing so it's not a problem using pedals for them

shure, but he wrote about the click/backing coming from the iPad.
obviously it's setup in the traditional way, so never mind ;)

  • I need to program a click track in order to have something to automate the fx to. I just intend to have it silent and synced to the drummers laptop somehow..

  • What happened to Birdstepper?

  • I'm using MIDI Designer 2 and BIAS FX to morph between two effects chains. BIAS allows dual effects chains but does not allow midi control of the built-in pan controls for some reason. So, I added a volume pedal at the beginning of each chain and set up a crossfader in Midi Designer to raise one while the other lowers. I also have two buttons that will morph between the two channels at a configured speed so I can press the button and get back to playing while the sounds slowly morph.

  • What about Effecetrix? It’s a guitar effects sequencer:

  • Cheers mate, this looks like it might be exactly what I'm after! Away now for the weekend so I'll have a proper look when I get back. Nice one :-)

Effectrix is great, but there is a 1/4 note limit to how slow the sequencer can go, so 32 steps in 1/4 note steps is 8 measures-not long enough for a song. It's more meant for repeating patterns of switching effects on and off on different beats of the measure.

You can change patterns win effectrix, with MIDI notes, so you could sequence long midi notes to represent patterns, but Flux:FX does that too, and has better sound quality. The reverbs, especially, sound better in flux.
